ok... i have bought some new pieces for my computer, got them all installed, and... well... everything crashes every 5 seconds on anything! did i make a compatability problem? my hardware is..:
abit kt7a-raid motherboard
1ghz athlon t-bird processor
ati radeon w 64 mb on board ram
soundblaster live value
my old 20 gb hdd, not compatable with UDMA or whatsit (i think)
and 128mb pc100 ram (also from my older computer)
and whatever other miner peripherals/cards
like i said, it doesnt matter what i run, or do, it will crash very easily. i did a clean install 3 times in one day and still experience problems. im pretty much at a loss as to what i can do now. however, i do plan on getting a new HDD and some new ram..
on another note: what IS raid and what exactly is its purpose/use?
hdd was formatted each time i attempted an install of windows. other peripherals include the usual, cd rom(generic), cd burner (HP plus 9100), floppy disks (erm, no clue), hdd (western digital), some pci 56k modem, and what not... i have 3 different cooling fans in my tower, a 'fopo5' for the processor (not what came with the processor, supposedly better and AMD approved) and some other fans draw in and blow out functions, 300 w power supply, & extra USB ports (not exactly a card, but considered pci i believe). even though i have a ghz processor, its underclocked to 750, but i dont care about that for now.
any other info required?
*might be interesting*
I also get some weird thing after installing the radeon drivers, the monitor acts as if it gets no signal from the video card. it may be it just needed restarting but every time i went into safe mode, opened the video properties (where you change resolution and color depth) and messed with the change driver thing, then canceled out anything i did in there (it asks for a restart no matter what i do) and blah blah... then in boot up all's well, for the video.
Have you tried to go into bios and load the default or safe settings. If you have tried to run the memory at CAS2 when it is older CAS3 memory that would cause some problems. I had an old Athlon 600 on an MIS 6167 board that for the life of me could not find the problem. It would lock everytime when every I opened outlook express and would lock with sound repeating in Quake 3.
Screw liberty, give me broadband or give me death!
i have done some messing in the bios like that, i tried setting it for 'load fail safe defaults' and 'load optimized defaults' either setting yielded the same result... terrible stability. i have no clue what this CAS# memory you are talking about is... please explain.
I'm just curious if it crashes with just the Videocard in there? You should always try to get the PC running with just the bare minimum. Wait till you solve those problems before sticking sound, ethernet, modem, etc in there.

If it is an athlon"C" 1 gigahert with a 133 fsb then Im pretty sure that PC100 ram is not going to work with a sh|t. Best guess would be get some pc133 CAS2 Crucial memory or similiar brand. Its not that expensive anymore and should fix the problem if indeed your AMD chip is a 1000/266.

yep that is what i was thinkin. Dude you need better memory. This is not optional. You are trying to run memory rated at only 100MHz at 133MHz it aint gonna work. I will have the same problem next time I upgrade cause my memory is pc100 and the new cpus need 133. If you can't afford memory trade your cpu to someone with one that runs at 100MHz FSB.
If you check out the specs for the KT7A you will find that it accepts either pc100 or pc133. I don't think the memory is the problem (unless you screwed up the bios memory settings); and it's unlikely that the HDD is the problem. The most likely candidates are the video card and the soundblaster. Are these the new pieces?
An asus a7v133 CAN accept pc100 memory, but only with a 100/200FSB chip....
On the Asus board at least, if you run a chip speed of 133FSB, you MUST run memory at 133 also, you cannot step down. Don't know about his kt7a though.

because the system is not really trying to do anything fancy until it is installed, it is all basically DOS with a little GUI wrapped around it. The same reason you can overclock a system that will post, but will not actually boot into windows - or will not be stable in windows once it gets there. Then when you start doing things, like explorer, higher graphics resolutions, fast disk access etc. - BANG!

Not really familiar with the A7V133 but it should be able to accept pc-100 memory even with a 133fsb chip. The problem, as I understand it (could be wrong), is if, in the bios, you try to run the pc-100 memory at 133.

Like I said, could be wrong...

That sucks ass! But I did say I could be wrong!
Edit: And my link above also sucks ass!!! It doesn't work, damnit!

At the beginning of this thread you said that you bought some new pieces for your computer, installed them and now every thing crashes. I was trying to determine what those pieces are. In other words, was your computer working ok before you installed the new pieces? What were the pieces you added?
azza mainboard (not sure the exact model)
p2 450
128mb pc100 ram
ati rage pro/all in wonder (not exactly sure but it was a crumby card)
soundblaster awe64
same modem i use now, 3com 56k robotics voicefax modem
same hdd i use now, 20gb western digital
250 watt power supply
same cd, cd burner, and floppy drive
i think that was about it... one note though, something either burned up on the old mainboard or the processor, because it wont work at all.
