Here's what I'm about to buy, so make your comments and observations NOW. It's important that you understand that this is NOT a gaming system, nor an MP3 music mill. I'll be staring at these screens for the next 5 years while I build an 800,000 record ALL TEXT database. I expect to start with a reasonable processor and up the ante later, if necessary.

That's pretty much it. This is a database creation machine, and God help me if it's not the right choice.

I would check out logitechs RF keyboards and mice if you are going with wireless. We used those in the Tech area at Best Buy, they can take a damn good beating and still work. Work from a good range too and through objects. Not to sure if an IR one would be so great.
Screw liberty, give me broadband or give me death!
There was a hacking article on RF Wireless keyboards. IR ones are more secure. I have an IR Keyboard Cursor control. Its not heavy duty, but its cool for watching dvd's, playing solitaire or doing this and that from across the room lying in my bed.
It has a really good range, but naturally you need a line of sight.

how big is the database going to be? my only thought for 5 years of work is BACKUP STRATEGY!!!!
Can you back up this work effectively on CDR? Do you need to think tape? If you are creating a single database, will it fit in 700MB? Can it compress effectively to do so etc. Do you need tape?
I would also consider Virus protection (Norton 2001 or similar) mandatory and mirrored HDDs recommended.
The basic line here is you cannot afford to lose this data - right? Back it up VERY frequently!

Chances are pretty small, unless the KGB is sitting 20 feet away from my bedroom window. I'm not too worried over my chances with the KGB. My Top Secret Crypto security clearance expired 30 years ago, anyway.
peteb, all good questions about database backup. I'm anticipating a single version to be 100-200MB maximum, and that's only when I'm finished with the project. It should be a linear ramp-up to that level, so I don't expect even 100MB for several years, which is why I was considering playing around with an LS-120 superfloppy. Believe it or not, Panasonic has come out with a version of the LS-120 that puts 32MB on an ordinary floppy, as well as the 120MB capability with the special media.
I've thought about tape, too, but magnetic media of any kind make me leery. One moron with a refrigerator magnet and you're toast!
I've just begun looking into the question of long term stability of CD-R media, although I'm sure it'll be OK for the short haul. The current plan, therefore, is to use CD-R for backup.
You'd probably want to go with CD, tape and SuperDisk. If you can store three different versions of the media in three different places, you're probably pretty safe.

The easiest and most convenient backup medium is a second HDD. CD-RW are ok, but SLOW. Tape backup is SLOW and rather inconvenient. Zip drives and L-120 don't have high capacity and the media is expensive.

No, I'm not joking.
Just thought I'd let you know that there hasn't been a KGB for a bunch of years now so I think you can relax.

BTW, I wasn't totally serious about a tape drive, superdisk AND CD-RW.
Just use a RAID and mirror the drives (RAID 0). And then use tape backup as well. That's probably the best for safety and ease of use. I don't know what your cost factor is.
