Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1

In Automatic Updates, I have my system set to notify me before downloading or
installing updates. My system notified me of the Micosoft Windows Installer
3.1 update. When I clicked on the update icon in the system tray to start
the download, the notification icon disappeared and the download did not take
place.

How can I get the automatic update to download through "Automatic Updates"
without having to go through the WIndows Update page?

Are you super, super sure it did not work? I had the same update show up
this afternoon.
Keep in mind, when you click on the notification, it most likely minimizes
itself to the "notification area".
Clicking on it there, will put it back up-front on your monitor.

What indication did you get that download did not take place? an error
message?

Hi Maurice,

No error messages. It minimized but it immediately disappeared. If the
download had taken place, it should have prompted me to install the
update...I have "Automatic Updates" set to notify me before downloading and
to notify me before installing.

I also know that it was not installed because when I go to the Windows
Update page this critical update is listed for me.

It was a couple of hours after I started the download that I was prompted to
do the install. It didn't seem so big that should have been the case, but
.... has it prompted you yet?

Hi karen,

No, it has not promted me. FYI, I was alerted to this update yesterday and
tried to download the update yesterday. I was never prompted to install
because the download never started or completed.

Hello Darrell,
Locate the log file for Windows Updates & take a look in it for "Error" notations.
Look for file WindowsUpdate.log in your C:\Windows folder ( or it may be C:\WINNT on your system).

Use Notepad or Wordpad to open & view contents. Scan down to the very bottom. Copy the last 20-25 lines for that last session-date & paste back into a reply in here. Look for an Error exception at the end, such as 0x.......... Error

You must make sure these Win XP services are enabled :

Automatic Updates
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
Cryptographic Services
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
System Restore Service

Go to Start menu >Run > MSCONFIG <enter>
Click on the "Services" Tab & review these services. They should have a green "tick/check" mark on left.

Very quick note, Darrell. When you saw notification, did you click on the icon and do something? you didn't press the X button did you?
Yes, automatic updates did indeed connect, and it did download some stuff.
This will take a while to digest. Hope to get back later.

I clicked on the icon to begin the download and thats it. The icon minimized
to the notification area and then disappeared. I just dont think it finished
the D/L.

Thanks forthe info Maurice, but my system is already configured for
"Automatic Updating". I have not had any problems in the past with updates
with the way my system is set to receive notification of new updates and
installation of new updates.

XP PRO/SP2 with all updates besides the Windows Installer 3.1 v2 update.

Take a look (via Windows Explorer) at folder C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 (or C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32).
Find and highlight Msiexec.exe
Look for its version number. It should be at a version 3.1.nnnnn Post that back.

I'm thinking it either completed the task, or that you already had this update.

1) From main Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>

type in
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

Go to Windows Explorer.
Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name. Like Windows or WINNT.
Modify following as appropriate.
If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are stored from W U downloads.

Go back to Command prompt window.
type in
net start wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>

Msiexec.exe version number - 3.1.4000.1823 date created 3/31/03

I deleted 3 files that were in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

When I look in Add/Remove programs, I see the Windows Installer 3.1 listed
but when I goto the Windows Update site it says that I need to install this
critical update.

Then use ADD / Remove Programs option from Control Panel, and select it, and
remove.

Suggestion: Add MS update sites to the IE browser Trusted sites list.
Internet Explorer > main menu /Tools/Internet Options >

Security Tab/ click on green icon Trusted Sites/click Sites button.

Look very closely at line that says:

"Require server verification (https:)  for all sites in this zone" to
*clear* the selection.
(e.g. You want that to be un-checked (un-ticked)).

In the "Add this Web site to the zone:" field, add these entries to
list of "Trusted Sites" --

type
http://*.download.windowsupdate.com (click Add)

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

https://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com (with HTTPS)

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Click OK. Apply changes to IE browser.

Then use your Internet Explorer browser (or Windows Update from main menu)
and go to Windows Update again.

? When I went to Remove Windows Installer 3.1, it gave me a warning that if I
remove this program some of my other programs may not run correctly. For
this reason I did not remove Windows Installer 3.1. Should I still remove
Windows Installer 3.1 from Add/Remove programs?
