I'm a beginner at connecting networks, and I wonder if I can I connect a 2-computer network without a hub?
I have networkcards in both computers and a cable.

I don't know which kind of cable it is, but "IA/EIA 568A 4STP 24AWG STRANDED" is printed at the cable.

I have managed to connect both computers to internet by a cable modem using the same cable and network cards, so they should be allright (at least I hope so).

Can anyone please tell me how to connect the computers togheter (if it's possible)??

Right. First, check the wiring order of the wires in the cable. If the order is the same at both ends, you have a straight through cable (one way). If two of the wires are switched, you have a Cross over cable (two way). Depending on your needs, you can use either, but I recommend the latter.

Now you just connect the computers together. That's the hardware bit done.

You need to configure each computer. Make sure each has TCP/IP installed in the properties of the neighbourhood network. Gives the two systems different names, but make sure the workgroup is identical!

Now you need to allow each or either computer to share files/printers etc.

Lastly, go to the properties of the HDDs in each system and enable them as shared.

I can't remember the sequences for re-booting. Go witht the system prompts, and reboot after sharing the files, if you can't see drive sharing as an option.

Once booted up, double check each NIC for lights, and check out the network neighbourhoods of both. If blank, F5 can help sometimes.
