Question-

I read of a problem that sometimes occurs with WinXP where the refresh rate reverts back to 60 hertz when playing games.

No matter how many times you correct and set the refresh rate back to eg. 85hz, as soon as you play a game it reverts back to 60hz, even though the monitor and graphics card can support 85hz easily.

The problem was in the WinXP OS. The solution was posted but I forgot what it was as it was over a year ago.

If you know how to rectify this, please post the solution,

Thanks,

It's also possible to put an override value in for DirectX games. I have mine set to 85Hz, as I run a few games in 1600x1200, and my monitor won't do 100Hz at that resolution. (I had it set at 100 before running games at 1280x1024). It's in the DirectX control panel. I haven't tried OpenGL in a while, so I'm not sure if it works for OpenGL.

No, it doesn't work for OpenGL, just for DirectX. I'm also using 85Hz as an override value.

There is an app that will work even under OpenGL. It's called ReFresh Force.

Search on google for it.

Some day I'll be rich and famous for inventing a device that allows you to stab people in the face over the internet.

... or get Powerstrip from http://www.entechtaiwan.com/ it lets you lock refreshrates at all times and there are lots and lots of other nifty functions as real-time overclocking whilst playing, etc.

HI

I have a 980 pro. Is there somewhere that I can put an "override" in the directX settings to stop it going back to 60htz? Only does it for certain games.

I assume your reply was aimed at Nvidia cards!?

Thanks...

No... I have a Radeon 9700 Pro.

Run dxdiag... the override setting you need to change is there. It won't work for OpenGL games, though.

mike the app is called reforce rate i think, i use it myself. its only a tiny app download it, run it and it will enforce correct refresh rates for any gfx card. Also ive posted this kinda post before but ppl be careful as certains games dont like reforcerate, battlefield 1942 is one game that wont run with reforce rate enabled. Just dont forget that cos i almost pulled all my hair out trying to get BF to run when i first got it :p

Thanks.. found it. Tried it and it did not seem to make any difference. That is unless I should have done a re-start before trying it?

It's only one program so far. Tomb Raider 4, sad I know, but someone bought it me for Christmas and it's sort of "cute" in a retro sense. Reminds me of when games used to be a decent length. The funny thing is, the original game off the disk did not do the re-fresh thing... though the loading times between levels took ages (an XP thing so I found out). I managed to pick up an "amended" executable that sorted this out. But since then, when coming back to the desk top, it now goes back to 60htz. Strange... Not a big problem I suppose.

Thanks for your assistamnce folks.
