Hi! Graphics card advice

First I'd just like to say that I'm new here and that I hope this is the correct forum to be posting this in.

right, now onto my "problem":

my current system as it is:

AMD 1900+
512 mb RAM
Geforce2 GTS
A7V mainboard

At the moment i can afford to upgrade one component. the graphics card in my opinion is the worst part of the system. ideally, I'd like to be able to play half-life 2 without it looking like a dia show. I have roughly 200 euros to spend but I'd be happy if it were less. I have no idea what card I should try and get, looking at the guides i see only a few cards that come in consideration:

5900xt
5800 ultra
5700 ultra

can anyone give me any advice? thx a lot already.

I just read the gc advice sticky, which sort of half answers my question, the other half would be: what card would be best suited to my system?

well, for 200 euros you can get a much better card these days.
You can get a radeon 9800pro or geforece 6800 for that amount.

200 is really the MAXIMUM and also the ammount i would hate to part with. also, i think my system is a wee bit slow for a 6800 ... i dunno, i'm considering a 5900xt ..

Get Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB. It's much better than FX5900XT

The 5900XT is so slow in HL2 that they have to have it render an easier scheme to have it produce decent framerates. A 9800 pro would be much better.

okay seriously, i suggest you wait for a while until the new midends come out 6600GT/X700pro/XT also by that time nVidia and ATi would probably come up with slower X800/6800s like 6800XT or X800SE and then its modding time

The 5900XT will be forced to render HL2 in dx8.1, they did this because it is simply too slow to render HL2´s dx9 graphics. and yes it sucks in HL2 compared to the 9800pro (which will be running dx9, so don´t worry)

But if you can find it for 200€, I will recommend the 6800 over those two

This is for ounterstrike source. I wouIld take a good look at it. (the only card that I wish was there was an x700) But because you have an agp card. I would also suggest 9800pro.
