An article at Gamespot about an Nvidia demonstration at the world cyber games.

QUOTE- "The Opteron 250 GeForce 6800 GT SLI system scored an impressive 8,081 points in the recently released 3DMark05 benchmark. In comparison, a single GeForce 6800 GT scored 4,452 points on a slower 2.8GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor in a recent GameSpot 3DMark05 test."

I forgot to mention, Nvidia are saying the scores will get significantly higher when they optimise the drivers.

Geoff,

It is odd they compared the scores from an Opteron 250 to a P4 2.8. Why not take one card out of the SLI and compare? Apples-to-Oranges on nVidias part.

As for nVidia saying, "the scores will get significantly higher" the problem is 4,452 x 2 = 8,904. That is less than 900 points higher in 3DMark05. 900 points is nothing to laugh at, but I would not call 10% significantly higher, although it is hard to compare when you are looking at two very different systems.

Anyhow, if they can get close to 8k with 2 cards compared to 1 card,m on the same system, in the 4.5k range I will be impressed. I still like the idea of high performing cards with new features (WGF, turbo cache/hyper memory, DX10, and so on), almost doubling scores is NICE.

imagine the power they will consume ? Considering Nvidia single cards require much more power than ATI, 2 cards in SLI thats to OCed (maybe even BFG oced) will raise the electricity bill.
I really want to see macci dudes, using opterons...
BTW its pcie and not pci-x, u totally killed the standard.

Ironically I got most of it, but also felt lost a few times in his post.

The way I see it:

The comparison wasn't too fair anyways. An Opteron 2.4GHZ is far more powerful than a P4 2.8GHZ. It's an equivalent to a 3800+ almost. That's about 30% more performance. While 3DMark05 does not require a lot of CPU power, it still will affect scores.
So the score isn't the most impressive IMO. But still, on average, that's at least a 75% increase in performance. If this applied to all games or average over 50% performance, we may be onto something potentially good here. But it definitely needs to be consistent and fine tuned.

For me, I want to see at least a 70% leap over one card in a game like DOOM3. If it’s less than that, I will counsel myself as to whether its worth the extra expense of two cards and whatever other supporting hardware. I guess 50% is still a sizable increase, but I don’t think I can get past the double cost for a 50% performance increase.

If I can get over 85% I will be very happy.

Geoff.
