I wonder if by the time they paper launch the next gen cards, if the current paper launched cards will be out yet?

both companies have become so self minded in this stupid battle and the only casualties are us the consumers.

6600GT is out (PCIe only though), Newegg has them NIB for under $200. Do you live in the U.S.?

Sure the X800XT is in short supply, but sooner or later it will be everywhere and everyone will buy it. In this case ATi is the real sucker, not the consumer, because they are losing the enthusiast camp that they won over with the 9700/9800 Pro. A lot of those people are now buying the 6800GT because, well, it's available for one thing, but also it performs every bit as much as it costs. IMO the X800 Pro does not, and on top of that the X800 Pro often costs more than the 6800GT. There's only so long that you can sit on your hands waiting when you could be playing Doom at 1600x1200.

I understand the humor about paper launches, but actually I think ATi and nVidia are now planning a 2-year product cycle, so there will be plenty of 6800 Ultras and X800XTs out long before they even paper launch their next cards.

R5xx is coming out next year for sure, which means 1 year cycle this time.

R480 is already due to make an apperance next month (probably won't actually appears in stores until '05), so really, expect there to be more paper sooner rather than later.

I was considering trying to afford a 6600GT for myself sometime next year, but now that I've seen some talk about the 6700 series I guess I'll just have to wait and see

worst part is, all this coming from an ATI owner and fanboy

One would think so. But who knows for sure. Not holding my breath waiting.
