Building computer with limited budget. I play games but I am not a hard core gamer. Wonder if I should spend the money in the ATI RADEON 9800 PRO 256 MB or just the 128 MB ? ...is there a big difference in performance ? Please help.
CPU AMD Athlon 3200+ Barton
MEM. 512 MB Corsair
HD WD 120 gigs
I think its upto the drivers and games to utilize the RAM, not entirely chip based. Bcos thinking logically, 9800pro with 128 or 256 have the same chip. So accessing memory maybe a sole purpose of the application. For eg: doom 3. And thats y doom 3has all those modes. and BTW VRAM was discontinued a long time back. They use SD/SG RAM now

You need more VRAM when you play latest games at 1600 x 1200 or use 4x or more AA in high res. Latest games doesn't run well with R9800 Pro with extreme settings, and this is why you don't need more than 128 MB for R9800 Pro
I noticed substantial differences in the price of a Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB depending on the manufacturing...all the way from 228 bucks for an ATI Radeon to 178 for other brands....what's the difference?...reliability?...name?...performance?....
