This is from PCWorld / November 2003 / page 168

"Valve Software's Half Life 2 wasn't available at the time of this writing, but it should be in stores by the time you read this. If you live for Doom, however, you will just have to be patient: Id Software's long-awaited upgrade, Doom III: The Legacy, won't be ready until early next year."

Meh?

Was the review written at the end of last year?

If so, it suggests that the game was in a reviewable state at the end of last year... which gives credence to Valve actually being done alot sooner, but waiting until Steam was reworked because of the source code leak...

Or maybe just a huge, stupid error?

Meaning it was probably written in August/Septemeber and found on Store shelves in October (most magazines lead by one month [I already have Nov. MaximumPC and a few others]).

I think alot of magazines had stories like that 'by the time you're reading this...', the same was said about a few items in the last two months of CPU (SLI/ALX being one IIRC).

That's the problem with having publishing lead times. Of course magazines make more out of it than they need to, heck I get The Economist every monday (dated for the week I'm reading no less) with barely week old news in it.

Valve has been delaying the game for like 2 years now. Nov 2003 was the time when i think it got leaked.

If a product is ready, why sit on it for a year or longer? Will that lost earning potential ever be made up? They will make a LOT of money with HL2, but will they really make more money after waiting so long? It seems like the opportunity cost is through the roof. This last year could have been spend on development toward a future project.

I like seeing Baldur's Gate II way up there, but IMO, GB1 was way better than BG2... gamers just didn't like idea of ending a game at level 8... but when you leveled up in BG, you earned it...

I wonder if by waiting, they let the gamers out there upgrade to systems that can play the game... perhaps a lot more people will buy the game because a lot more people can play the game... I do not think this was a strategy, but it is a reality... sure, some people upgrade for a game, but many others only play what their system can handle... I guess a lot of other people buy games and do not upgrade until a games kicks the hell out of their computer...

Could it be that they waited because they have integrity? That would be something.

BTW <A HREF="http://www.metacritic.com/games/pc/scores/" target="_new">heres</A> the full list.

You will see that Counter Strike has a higher score than Doom3

All those are critic scores and may differ from us users (though i agree with #1) I wud have put Doom 3 in top 10 for sure. CS (bcos of its originality) in top 15. Rest all games are pretty popular.

I wud have given quake to be no. 2 for sure.

why sit on it
Exactly my feelings about Doom 3- they spent way too much time designing spectacular environments while not succeeding in creating diverse gameplay (it is fun at night, in the dark, though). If they had focused a little bit less on the sheer volume of content, they could have had it out last year, no doubt about it, and it would have had more gameplay value.

Well because Valve can't make good code, legal issues with Sierra, very little game content, just to name a few reasons why they sat on the game for so long.

Christ the current version of CS2 or whatever they are going to call it now has a full access to your system flaw in it. I understand MS having to deal with a problem like that lots of goofy programmers over there. But a company that claims they can play with the big boys can’t even get code out the door that at least works well with the OS.

Take it from Carmack and the time he placed on the game. I have yet to see the game crash or give me any trouble other than the PDA gun deal but that’s fixed with 1.1.

For Valves sake I hope the game is good, stable, and well performing. But I guess coming from me that doesn’t mean too much, since I have absolutely no love for Valve.

Also I am a firm believer that source code leak was bullshit simply because what the hell are they going to change to make the engine that much more different from the last build??? What they change compilers, load order, optimized, memory management, what what I don’t even know what the hell they were up to other than making more game content (that’s a plus) and cleaning up code (another plus).
