Hey all. I am gearing up for HL2 but do not want to spend much. What is a step better then a 9800 pro 128 card? I am looking for frames and graphics. Please help!

well in ATI its x800 pro, but better buy is 6800GT. I think even a 6800 OCed will be better. If those are expensive then x700/6600GT (these are pcie only at the moment)

heya eroc24;

Unfortunately for you the X700, and 6600GT arent any faster then the R9800 pro, so your only option is the 6800GT or the X800XT, in either case your going to spend $400, sorry to give youi the bad news.

Wow, i am surprised by that. The 9800 pro must be a great card then and it is even old school as well. That makes me feel better then. What the the 9800 XT, any better or about the same. BTY, thank you for the great information.

There's no practically noticable performance difference between Radeon 9800 Pro and XT

Not really- 6 months ago the best graphics card on the market was the 9800XT, which is just a slightly faster R360.

In some new titles when detail levels are set to high, the 9800XT with it's clock speeds and 256MB ram, can vastly outperform the 128MB 9800 pro. But most the of the time they are pretty close. For an extra $30 the 9800XT would be a great choice. Problem with the 9800XT is that it still costs $300 and 9800 pro's are under $200. At $300, it approaches the price of the X800 Pro, which can be found in the $330-$350 range. The X800 pro is much quicker, so again the 9800XT loses. And the GF6800GT usually outperforms the X800 Pro and starts around $350.

Anyway, the 9800XT was the king once, but unless the price drops alot before supply dry's up, the 9800XT will never be a smart buy.
