there are too many versions of each video card with a little tweak here and a little tweak there. its really starting to bug me. i think nvidia and ati should combine and make one super love child card. but enough of the rant here is my question:

i am looking to get a new computer and am a very serious gamer but with limited funds. i was thinking of getting a radeon 9800 pro 128mb but i was wondering if you guys would suggest getting a newer model? i am not sure what the real difference between the x300 x600 and x800 are. i am wary because i almost fell into getting a g4 mx a while back and it turns out those cards are junk. is it worth the jump of $300 to get the newest model? or should i stick with the 9800? also if i am too get a better card i will have to cut my 1024mb ddr to 512mb too get the higher end cards, is this a worth while trade off?

i wud say keep mem at 1gig. A processors demand is more importsnt than a Video cards.
Unless u wanto go in for a geforece 6800gt (higher cost but really good performance) stick with a 9800pro 256bit 128MB from someone like HIS. that card shld last till san andreas hits PC. HL2 will work well on it. D3 can be tuned to work well (ok) on it.
X800pro aint a good choice unless they cut the prices to much less than a 6800GT. [-peep-] x300 and x600, not sure if u will find them even on the retail market in agp.

ah all right i getcha. i am not biased at all so would you say go with the nvidia instead? if so what lower level card (in the bellow 400 dollar mark) would you recommend?

if ur budget is $400, then a BFG 6800GT OC (more popular and lifetime warranty), or i think a Gainward Stock OCed are your two best choices.
and these are not lower level cards, they are all high end. for 400 one always goes in for high end.

is the fact that it only has 128mb any kind of problem or is that enough for it to run well?

ur missing a GT in there. thats a diff card. I recommended a geforce 6800GT 256 MB, will cost around 370-390, there are generally promotin with it. See best buy.
