Before you say anything, i've looked through the archives and found
this same problem, but the fix doesn't work.

On powerup, the mushrooms are in a line down the left side. The
scorpion is always in the same row, and the spider does a full diagonal
every time, like Mark Spaeth said.

I've swapped the POKEY with a known good one, and that make absolutely
NO difference.

Any ideas?

check your traces and your socket. these can show up as a bad chip.
does flexing the board make a difference? does p1 or p0 show up in
test mode as bad?

pokey associated circuitry then, barring socket/trace issues. Least you know
the area to work in.
