And here I am, again, stuck between picking a 6800 or a X800. Let me point a few cons and pros about the AGP versions of both cards...

----------------

- GeForce 6800, 6800GT, 6800 Ultra.
Pros: Excellent performance in standard resolutions (800x600, 1024x768), and in higher ones in a few cases. Equipped with Pixel Shaders 3.0 and full support for DirectX 9.0c applications (Games, more specifically). Rumored to have the best image quality.

Cons: No support for tomorrow's high quality videos, such as WMVHD or WMV9 (AGP Version), which has been a hot topic among most people and has a considerable FPS drop when used at higher resolutions (1280x1024, 1600x1200) with FSAA+AA.

----------------

- X800 Pro, X800 XT, X800 XT Platinum Edition.
Pros: Insane performance in both standard and higher resolutions (800x600 -> 1600x1200), seems to beat 6800's in most performance tests. X800's are said to reach lower levels of image quality, but with higher performance.

Cons: Lacks in Pixel Shaders 3.0 support, but still supports Pixel Shaders 2.0 and is designed to DirectX 9.0b software generation.

----------------

My point? Well I can't really choose between them. I would have picked the 6800 GT three days ago, but I heard about it's lack of HW support for WMVHD. And add one more thing to this - X800's higher performance in larger resolutions, even with FSAA+AA enabled.

I want to hear your thoughts about this. Is there anything else I should consider? I might end up getting a X800, because only now I saw how much better it is to play in higher resolutions... thus it has WMV9 on-chip support... but lacks Pixel Shaders 3.0....ARGH! HALP! xD

IMO its just one question: What do you like most? Ati or Nv? As you say in your post every card as its cons and pros. The Doom 3 and HL2 question is also a good choice pointer. If you want Doom 3 performance - 6800, if HL is your choice - X800. And by the way, whats your pc specs? if it isnt a high end pc with high end components its no worth to buy such cards IMO.

P4-2800->FSB800, Asus P4P800, 512DDR-400, Creative GeForce DDR (the first one lol)

I'd like to point out that nvidia is as good as ati in higher resolution.

I'd also like to point out that nvidia is faster in hl2 at the moment.

What do you mean in lack of video support. Ati is the one using the same same old chips since years. Nvidia has a much better video support.

All the new top end card have almost no performance drop at 1280*1024 . They all do 1600*1200 very fast too. WITH aa and ani too.

And the X800 series does have support for the videos? The 6800's supposedly have them, its just not supported through drivers yet. And when comparing the 6800 GTand the X800 pro; in HL2 they are pretty much equal.
