Check out this and find out why Microsoft wants to be just like Linux. Makes you wonder if they might be getting scared a bit. I would be if I was them.

i would like very much to know how they arived at these two ideas.
In a meeting with financial analysts last week, CEO Steve Ballmer argued that Windows' total cost of ownership is lower than Linux's, while chairman Bill Gates claimed Microsoft is better at fixing software problems quickly than the open-source community.

If i were working in Microsoft, I drop out of Microsoft.

that would be not wise, caz MS will be furious and will pay more to smart pplz' ideas in order to beat the Linux (just a guess;)

They were talking about the same thing - money. You don't looze much of the money if they fix not functioning stuff quickly (sord of to say)

"Gates wants to be like Torvalds" - how did you come up with that? Why would he would want to "downgrade"?

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...

Downgrade? I guess that's why over half of todays websites are powered by linux and apache webservers...right? Cuz windows is so amazing that everyone who has a site that serves thousands of simultaneous visitors MUST run windows...

Of course if they did that, their sight would be like a 14.4 bps modem and no one would ever visit it.

There can be absolutely no argument when it comes to stability, configurability, speed, and efficiency (and don't forget price)...Linux will beat Windows every time. It's only a matter of time before it will be the most widely used operating system. So if you want to drive a Daewoo just because everyone else is, go right ahead. I'll drive off in my Lamborghini Diablo and I'll talk to you later.

Your brain is very confused by the bias you have in yer head. I was not talking about OSs, I was talking about the people (humanz as you see). And the "downgrade" would be in popularity and monetary existence in the bank. Kapish?

Now you can blahblahblahblah about your Linux as mach as you want, I don't care about it until someone in the Linux world will fix crappy fonts in Linux's browser. And I really care less about "why over half of today’s websites are powered by Linux", caz it is a really the money issue, not the "stability, configurability, speed, and efficiency", and if there were no money issue, I guess Unix and Solaris would be the king of the hill. Kapish?

"only a matter of time before it will be the most widely used operating system" - it is only a matter of time, till some body will come up with yet another OS which will beat Linux in every way, so then what would you say? (yer arguments are moot)

"(and don't forget price)" - I got my used laptop with w2k, so I did not "really" pay for it, so yer "Linux will beat Windows every time" lost this round.

As far as "efficiency" goes, whew, I could not get stupid sound card to work in laptop, I crashed installation withing two hours of "playing" with it,.. and you say it is efficient.

Yeah, I drive Avalon if you care (nice car by the way;)

"Of course if they did that, their sight would be like a 14.4 bps modem and no one would ever visit it"

Well, if you considering microsoft.com a slow site, I am resting my case. And by the way, ebay.com is still sitting on NT4, and with consideration of how many users are out there I don't think they are slower than anybody else ;)

Since an OS is simply code/ideas dreamed up by individual thought, it is impossible not to directly link them to the people that thought of them. But, if you want to play it that way...so be it. We're talking human beings here now eh? So then...a man that existed a few years ago named Hitler would have been tops in the food chain at the time as far as money and popularity and would have been admired greatly by you.

Linux will never make the money Microsoft makes...wanna know why? BECAUSE IT IS FREE. Don't be a moron...you can never compare something that is free to something that isn't. If linux weren't part of the open source movement...maybe you could base a monetary performance as a factor here.

Linux's browser? Last I checked it was groups such as Mozilla, Netscape, and Konquerer that did the fonts in browsers. Maybe if Microsoft decided that a universal web browser would be a good idea (heaven knows it would make them more money). Of course, then they'd lose their monopoly and help themselves become a bit moot. Doh!

I don't think someone will custom write an OS better and more available than Linux in our lifetime. There is too many people working on improving Linux every day...it will exist well into the future. Afterall, it is based on the original operating system ran by the first conceptual computers and all protocols such as FTP, Telnet, TCP/IP, and HTTP are based on the Unix kernel...which is directly responsible for the development of the linux kernel...It'll be around for quite some time.

My arguements are moot? Better check what you're saying...moot = obsolete. My arguments aren't obsolete until someone actually DOES program a better OS. Come back and post that one when it actually happens. Until then, stop giving me postdated checks that no one will cash.

So, you got your laptop for free eh? So that means everyone gets their laptops for free? This statement is the most moronic one contained in your post. When I read this, I saw sloth from the Goonies talking to me. Now wipe your mouth of the slober leaking out and snap out of the stupidity you're sharing with everyone at THGC. This statement didn't even make sense...Come back down from Never Never land Peter.

Efficiency? So you base your efficiency on whether or not you can install something eh? Efficiency is measure by how well a product performs over the course of time...not how well YOU perform. Just because you dropped the ball and couldn't find a way to install the sound card due to either lack of intelligence or lack of experience or choosing the wrong distribution of Linux or a combination of all of them....just because of these reasons doesn't make Linux any less efficient than it is. Once again, you are an incredible tool. You should learn a bit more and come back when school is over. Until then, keep the rogue comments that make no sense to yourself. They're taking up space on the boards.

"Hitler" - hehe, now you are talking about Hitler? hehehe.

"Linux will never make the money Microsoft makes..." - gg, now you started to get closer to getting it. That was my original point of "downgrading". Doh!

"you can never compare something that is free to something that isn't" - I did not compare, you did. Doh!

"So, you got your laptop for free eh?" - I did not say "free laptop". Doh!

"So that means everyone gets their laptops for free?" - So, does that mean every body gets Linux for free?

"When I read this, I saw sloth from the Goonies talking to me" - I like sloth, so I take it as a comliment.

"Efficiency is measure by how well a product performs" - well, are you moron yerself? It DID NOT PERFORM AT ALL in my case. Doh!

"couldn't find a way to install the sound card" - that is exactly what I am saying, there was no way, does not matter which way was it, I COULD NOT install/mount the device. Windows has no such issue.

"snap out of the stupidity you're sharing with everyone at THGC" - at least I am not hiding it behind "I am THE ONE" attitude. And pardon my French, stupid is you (even there is still a hope (I hope)).

And again about "BECAUSE IT IS FREE" - that IS EXACTLY my point of argument. It was wildly used from the beginning not because it was BETTER but FREE,.. now who is stupid?

*sigh*
It's pointless to debate anything with someone who doesn't comprehend English at a level equal to or above that of the other. In your case, I'm sorry you do not understand any of the points I made, nor the implications of said points. For example,

Quote :

"Efficiency is measure by how well a product performs" - well, are you moron yerself? It DID NOT PERFORM AT ALL in my case. Doh!

You missed my point in my previous post entirely. The problem was not 'it,' the problem was YOU. No matter what sound card is made...there is a Linux driver for it, I guarantee that. You may have to actually install it manually and it might require experience...but you will find it and be able to install the sound card. The only nonefficient production came from the chair you were using in front of your computer. That is my example of you swinging, missing, and striking out on the entirety of the meaning of my points. You may not even understand what I'm saying right now; if this is so, I am congruous to your misunderstanding. I hope in the future you can develop this much-needed skill of comprehension.

You should try and enhance some Platonian based debate skills as well so you don't come off sounding illogical. I'm telling you this so you can better yourself and debate things with more efficiency. If you insist on staying the same illogical, misunderstanding person...it can only be detrimental to any debate and will be no fault but your own. Plus, you don’t want to keep sounding amateurish and ignorant (two things I suspect you are not).

I cannot debate with someone who has no semantical understanding of English. If you develop a better grasp of the English language...don't hesitate to come back and find me. I'm sure you are a knowledgeable person when speaking in your native language...but due to the fact that we cannot find common ground in a language, I will not reply to you again on these boards because I know you will not understand the meaning of my posts. Please know this has nothing to do with you as a person, nor do I mean that you are any less intelligent because of this fact. I simply would appreciate debating with someone that actually understood me instead of someone who does not.

""*sigh*"" - ggs, finally, someone got tired of looking in the "mirror". I tried to talk to you the same "philosophical" way you did. Usually phony Philosophers when they could not understand the theme of the conversation, tried to gradually lure the conversation away from the points they did not comprehend (I think we started with "downgrade" of BG) into the things they were proficient at (history and philosophy), so that way they will look not as stupid as they were (call yerself guru and opponent "stupid" ), because true Philosopher is the "one who meets or regards all vicissitudes with calmness" and have “the quality of being changeable” which in our case is not true ""I cannot debate with someone who has no semantical understanding of English"" – and the funny thing is that there is nothing English specific, just a point of view on the subject.

I bring you my deepestest apologies for the time I have wasted with you (I meant you time;) and will try to stay away from replying to "tks" handle in the future, so you will have no temptation to resist and torture yerself in order not to reply to "stupid, non-English" expressions I am making in the forum (which by the way is for every body, and not just super sophisticated English educated mind gurus, which can not handle conversation in a proper, subject oriented way).

As usually, have fun unda da sun ;)

PPS: at this point stupid me is on it (the English study), so I will talk to you later (in case I will deserve such an attention;)

I feel sorry for you tks...

Anyways blah, some of your comments are, well, downright stupid.

"I don't care about it until someone in the Linux world will fix crappy fonts in Linux's browser."

Holy crap dude. You're not going to consider a free alternative to a ~$200 OS because of an OLD font issue with NETSCAPE??? There are a ton of browsers available for linux, with mozilla-firebird having some very nice fonts. What's more, if you don't like the ones it comes with, you can easily download and install more. Furthermore, you can use konqueror to get away from the full out netscape/mozilla thing, or you can run gnome and use nautilus (VERY flashy fonts and gui).

"And I really care less about 'why over half of today’s websites are powered by Linux'"

The admins of these websites KNOW what they're doing... They have a lot of experience and knowledge, thus their opinions should at least be respected.

"I got my used laptop with w2k, so I did not "really" pay for it"

So you didn't pay for w2k at all? I would argue that you did. Part of your purchase price went to the software. You paid for a used license. Sure, you can say you just bought the hardware and you got the software with it for free, but I might argue that you paid only for the software and got the hardware for free...

I've heard Ballmer make that comment before, but he retracted it after people told him he was stupid. Maybe he's back on that again... I dunno.

hehehe, I know you are little upset with my comments about the Linux, I am kind of sorry you are, caz my comments were not targeted at Linux at all (I run RH8 on my "extra" machine), but the biased dude. I know all the things you are telling me, there is no need to repeat them. But thanks again.

PS: And about the Windows, I never paid for one copy of them, except W2k Server+10cals for $135, which I have to legally run in my office (need good wireless support, and I am not as guru with Linux yet to have it working all the time for me).
Hehehe, and about "that you paid only for the software", gg, I've never heard $1200 for w2k pro yet, hehe (I am sure you know what I was talking about, but just want to make me look bad in front of these honorable posters of THG).

Take care.

That it's cheaper to run windows than linux
