I am currently doing a more minor upgrade on my system. I am running on a geoforce MX 440 right now and though it is an improvement over my 7500, im still falling short. I want to upgrade to a radeon 9550 but i was wondering how it differns from the 9500. Yes i know im behind the times but the 9500 can still runs some decent quality. I dont plan on playing HL2 or Doom 3 either so its not that bad. What are the differnces between the 9550 and 9500 and is that where i want to spend my $80-100? if not, what would u recommend?

Your best bet by far is a 9600 Pro. Newegg now has one for $100.

Next I'd say a 128-bit 9600 which is slower but has a silent passive heatsink if you want a silent card.

Next the R9550 128-bit. Then the 9500 which is hard to find a 128MB version under $100.

Just don't buy an SE model, and avoid any card with a 64-bit memory interface.

As I recall, your basic Radeon 9500 non-pro is about on par with your basic 9600 non-pro. The problem is, 9500's are usually more expensive than they're worth.

The Radeon 9550 128-bit version is an underclocked 9600.

If you're a tinkerer and a gambler, you might want to consider the 9500 non-pro. A good portion of them can be modded into 8-pipeline 9500 PROs with a simple driver hack, and even the ones that can't be modded are usually decent overclockers.

Funny, but if I remember
Best Buy sells a Radeon 9550 256mb for $129.99.
If I was looking for a budget card that handled Dx9, that wouldn't be too bad.
256 megs for under 150 clams?
You should check it.

256mb 9550 will give no advantages over the 128mb 9550.

For that price you could buy a Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB if you simply insist on owning a 256MB card. It would spank the 9550. Then again, so would the $100 9600 pro 128MB. Matter of fact, BestBuy will always charge sales tax, which means 9600XT 256MB would be available online for the same price as that 9550.

I am actually amazed the 9600 pro is now $100, and through a trusted site like Newegg even. Sure destroys the cards at retail chains for that price.
