Well really the cards are all within range of each other and have different strengths. I can pick benchmarks and reviews and show the X700PRO, GF6600GT or X700XT being the best card, they are really that close. The GF6600GT's strengths are really in the most 'normal' situations, and the X700XT wins in heavy load but lower res situations (and at higher AA/AF situations [where the GF6600GT seems to fall off the map]), and the PRO seems to take advantage of the 256mb of memory in some cases of high resolution high AA/AF despite slower speeds. I really want to see a Gainward GF6600GT 256mb vs Abit X700XT 256mb shootout, because that would really be the choice for that market as long as the premium isn't too much.
Personally, if I build before X-mas (IF the mobos get here!) I'm thinkig of getting a plain-jane GF6600 which sux for the average person IMO, but really I think it would be the perfect "Waiting for the R5xx/NV5x" card. The Gigabyte card with all the goodies is ~$130US on NewEgg. If you want this card for longer than 6-9 months I'd say forget it, but to last until the summer, it'd be fine. Of course it would be nice to see plain-jane X700price to compare to as well, but early boards are expensive.
