mx440 problems

Hey, im stuck with an mx440 because my 9600pro is off on rma to ati cuz it fried . My problem is that after i install drivers [im trying 4x.xx drivers right now] it freezes up at the windows 98 screen when i boot up [long story about having to use windows 98] i can get onto windows in safe mode but not in normal. i have tried the 61.78's [i think thats what they are] and they work ok but i can not play any game because when i try to load the game up it gives me a blue screen telling me a fatal error has occured somewhere and that it has to restart. i have tried direct x 9.0x and 8.1, 4 different nv drivers and i am cleaning the drivers before i reinstall with driver cleaner 3. is there anything i can do to get my comp to stop freezing on start up and to get it able to play games?

IIRC, older drivers like the Detonator 44.xx are really the best bet for GF4 and GF4mx cards. Maybe someone else knows for sure.

yea ive tried the 44.03's or something out and they allowed me to play cs... albiet ~25 fps, but thats a step forward but when i restarted because i had installed a new program it wouldnt let me get into windows so i used safe mode and cleaned the drivers and reinstalled the 61.78s or so. [i cant remember driver name... ati is simpler ] its really odd.. im not planning on turning my comp off cuz it will make me have to reinstall drivers, stupid 9600pro
