<b>IGN</b> <i>"I wanted to make this review short and sweet, but it's hard to stop writing, even when excluding facts that could potentially contaminate an exceptionally well thought-out gaming experience. There's just so much to say. Half-Life 2 is, simply put, the best single-player shooter ever released for the PC. It does so many things right in so many ways that it might be possible to write a thesis on the topic of Half-Life 2 compared to other single player shooters. What Valve has created is simply a masterpiece -- a work of art in the genre. Not only does it engage the mind with mysterious happenings, vagaries, and mostly intelligent dialogue, but also captures the senses with a superb visual style made possible by brilliant technology. And once the initial shock of it all wears off and it becomes possible to peel back the polished layers of sight and sound, there is an excellent shooter here. Half-Life 2 doesn't do anything particularly new; it doesn't really innovate in many ways. But what it does is set a new height for all other designers of first-person shooters to reach. It still isn't exactly perfect, but it's about as close as I've seen in my tenure here."</i>

GS and IGN are talking about this being the nicest looking game yet (even better than D3 overall). HL2 is the way NEW DX9 games should look! These are all ingame (HL2 does not have cut scenes, everything is from your point of view):

<b>My Question--D3 vs HL2 graphics</b>

While D3 has the "unified lighting" model and has almost exclusively dynamic lights and shadows, I would have to say HL2 and the normal mapping it displays is jaw dropping. Art style aside (I think HL2's style/setting is much prettier than D3), I have to say HL2 has shocked me. I was expecting something sub-D3 graphics wise but instead, after looking at the shots, am going WOW!!!

I am not knocking D3--Dynamic Lighting and Shadows will lead to more interactive scenary in the long run and D3 looks GREAT--but I am shocked with how clean HL2 looks. What do you guys think? Like or dislike? And how does it compare in your opinion?

My Question--D3 vs HL2 graphics
There's no point comparing the two. Both developers wrote their own graphics engine, both specifically for the needs of the game. Doom does darkness and shadows to great effect, while Half-Life's outdoor scenes look very pretty.

I think you summed it pretty well.

HL2 seems to shine for outdoors. The issue is they are in general flat graphics. DOOM III gives a more volumetric effect on surfaces, because of the well developped bump mapping.

So yeah, each has advantages. I think I'll look into DOOM III's engine if I wanted scare factor above all (lighting still is nuts in there), while if I wanted a great looking outdoor action game, HL2 will do it neatly. The engine is probably better suited for CSS too, over D3's.

EDIT: And yes, due to the great fit for outside effects, HL2 feels "cleaner", or a better word for it would be crisper. (kinda like Serious Sam)
