Whenever they unlock the damed thing, post you FPS with main rig config so they rest like me will know to expect from the REAL game.

Im not ceratin, havent bought the game yet but there should be a built in timedemo benchmark or just enable the FPS meter in the console and measure the high/low. Or it maybe a seperate prog to install since Ive heard the collectors edition has that benchtool weve all seen on the internet but cannot get. I could be wrong there.

Anand has their recorded timedemos available for DL. Grap those and give it a try. I will sometime by the weekend. That way we can all compare results.

<b>demos can be got from here</b>

----------------------------------------------------------------

<b>How to Bench</b>
You need to add the -console in the HL2 shortcut, if you have one. For those running it from steam menu, <font color=red>select HL2 in the menu -> right click on the game -> properties -> launch options -> put "-console" in there.</font color=red>

Start the game.
Console is pretty advanced and does auto complete for you. If you want FPS shown, type: <font color=blue>cl_showfps 1</font color=blue>
It will autocomplete 1/2 way thru, and you can use arrow keys to toggle commands.
then run <font color=blue>timedemo filename</font color=blue>. Note, filename will also autocomplete provided that you have put those .dem files in <font color=red>"C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\EMAIL\half-life 2\hl2"</font color=red>
You just need to enter the 1st character and it will auto complete.

If you use the command <font color=blue>timedemoquit</font color=blue>, then after each demo, HL2 quits. This is useless. Better to do all together using the <font color=blue>timedemo</font color=blue> command.

In either case all the results are logged (appended, so dont worry abt ols ones getting deleted) to the following file <font color=red>"C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\EMAIL\half-life 2\hl2\sourcebench.csv"</font color=red>

Its an excel (CSV) file. You can just copy and paste from there.

Also, these demos are spoilers, so watch out.

I ran through Anand's timedemos. No overclocking or tweaking for that matter, and ATI quality set to defaults (blend) in control panel. Resolution 1280x1024 with <A HREF="http://server3.uploadit.org/files/PaulDH-settings.jpg" target="_new">These Settings</A>

<font color=red>Cat 4.11</font color=red>

<font color=blue>68.42</font color=blue> AT_Coast_12
<font color=blue>66.87</font color=blue> AT_Prison_05

Anyway, even with a 9800 pro, i saw anywhere up to a 13% increase on these 5 timedemos going from 4.11 to 4.12b. Since none went down, and 2 hours of playing afterwards show no issues, I'll stick to the 4.12b's for now.

Pirya those are some real nice results espically with the levels you have everything on.

I just got done doing css stress test on a few diffrent settings, im going to do hl2 next (your walk threw is helpful).

Settings I actually play Counter Strike Source with:
----------------------------------------------------
Resolution: 800x600
Model Detail: Medium
Texture Detail: medium
Antialiasing: off
Antistropic: 2x
Water Reflect: world
Shader detail: high
Shadow Detail: high
Vertical sync: disabled

Average Fps: 117.54

High settings for the hell of it:
---------------------------------
Resolution: 1280x1024
Model Detail: High
Texture Detail: High
Antialiasing: x6
Antistropic: 16x
Water Reflect: All
Shader Detail: High
Shadow Detail: High
Vertical Sync: Disabled

Average Fps: 109.99

*Missing half my ram, as tested: 512 in single channel mode.

*Using timedemoquit isnt totally useless, it auto generates a file showing your results ("for automated benching").

Nice scores for that <b>puny</b> little card of yours. LOL

I'd like to be able to keep 1280x1024 and play 4xAA/8xAF, but no dice with this card. Does a 6800GT even support 6X AA, or is it 4x4=8X that you are using?

I wish more people would post scores no matter what their hardware is. Gives an idea what other can expect. Plus there are no full system/card comparisons yet showing minimum system to top end systems with a broad range of video cards. That may help people who are bound to ask what should I upgrade as my system is poking it in HL2. New mobo/cpu or new video card? etc. I know no site will take the time to test a full range of cards on a full range of systems as much as I'd like, But I wish they would. [H] did that huge D3 hardware guide, but still didn't mix and match a slow CPU with a fast video card, or vise-versa. All they did on the low end was test the minimum cpu with the minimum video card.

If someone had an XP1700+ and an R9600 Pro, what $350 upgrade would serve them better. A 6800GT/X800pro or an new mobo and A64 3000+. Or if they had a NF2, maybe a cpu upgrade and doubling the ram would be best. I'd love to have the time to test and report on complete results like that.

I know and I agree, I just got done bitching to grape about how more people seriously need to participate in our benchies around here, espically half life 2. Where every hardware site on earth is making their own demos and drawing their own half baked theorys. If we got a decent amount of people to bench here we could draw and work off our own real world conclusions.

Your card did very nice also. My antialiasing options on the 6800 Gt are off 2x 2xQ 4x 8xS.

Now that you point it out im not really sure what 2xQ and 8xS means, can someone enlighten me?

Just adding some #'s for a IS7/P4 2.6C no overclocking. Still 1GB(2-512MB)PC4000 and a R9800 Pro, and the Cat 4.12b drivers on ATI's default blend settings.

1280x1024 same exact settings as the A64 system i posted above. Only change is the mobo and CPU.

<b>Cat 4.12b</b>

48.74 AT_C17_12
61.49 AT_Canals_08
73.84 AT_Coast_05
63.54 AT_Coast_12
66.19 AT_Prison_05

With the exception of a close tie in prison_05, the A64 3000+ scored 4-8 fps higher than the P4 2.6C.

<A HREF="http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/half-life_2_athlon_xp/" target="_new">Firing Squad A-XP Benchies</A> are out now. It tests the X800 and 6800 series cards on Athlon XP's from 2100+ to 3200+, as well as a few at 2.4GHz. Also note they are using the 6702 forcewares for NV this time instead of the 6693's.

I had been thinking about doing the same thing with older cards (all I have :frown: ) as well take the cpu speed down to minimum specs also. I figure with an unlocked mobile XP2500+, I can come close to showing AXP performance by scaling from 1.2GHz up to 2.4 GHz. (I say come close because a 1.2GHz barton on NF2 with Dual channel DDR will outperform a TBird 1.2GHz on KT133 or even a K7S5A.) Anyway, I Just haven't found time to start that yet. It is something I'd enjoy, but is an overwhelming project as I hoped to do 6-8 video cards for HL2 first, and then continue on to other games like farcry, D3 demo, and MOHPA.

That would be very cool, as it will be real world results people with those cards can relate to and help give them insight about their systems.
