I have Packard bell 955 computer. It started giving me an a protection fault error and I would have to shutdown the computer. After tring all windows repair programs, I decided to re-format the drive and make a clean install of windows 98. After installing window 98 The computer tried to boot for first time and then I get this error message:
While initializing device NTKERN:
windows protection error. You need to restart your computer.

When I restarted the computer, I got the same error message.

What is device NTKERN:?

Need help,
James

Possible reason:
<A HREF="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q192/3/97.ASP&NoWebContent=1" target="_new">http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/Q192/3/97.ASP&NoWebContent=1</A>

It says you have a problem with your memory.

If you have more than one memory stick try running on only one. If that one gives u an error then switch to another one.

It is possible that there are causes for the memory problem.
