Now I have your attention, which is best, a FX5900XT or a Radeon 9800 pro, and how far can you push a 9800SE? I've a XP2000, 512mb and an ancient K7ama board.

Cheers, big ears!

the 5900XT, by a huge margin.*

Most 9800SEs can be pushed quite far, but they are lacking as many pipes as the Pro cards. If you soak them in vinegar overnight the blockages will often be corroded away, and then they'll usually hit clockspeeds in excess of 650Mhz.*

That's an interesting mod, never heard of it before. I have a 9800 Pro and I was looking to squeeze some more performance out of it. What kind of vinegar do you recommend? Cider? White? Red Wine? Does Newegg sell vinegar?

They're picking on you for not actually reading anything from the past 2 years related to computer graphics. 9800SE is a 9800 Pro cut in half. It's actually an upgraded version of the 9500 non-pro. It even sits on the same PCB. PCB means printed circuit board. Oh, and they can be pushed quite far, you might get one up to 9600 Pro performance levels!

OK, so you also have the 5900XT, a weakened version of the 5900, which is still weak compared to a 9800 Pro.

Now there are 2 versions of the 9800 Pro, the original with 256-bit memory interface, and the fake, with a 128-bit memory interface. Since the fakes are cheaper, they've flooded the market. ATI doesn't say much because they're interested in selling newer cards now.

The 256-bit version of the 9800 Pro is a very good performer. It's available in 128MB or 256MB versions. The 128MB version often outperforms the 256MB version slightly, I think it's due to lower memory latency. And the 128MB version is cheaper.

There is a game that prefers the 256MB version, but the price difference probably isn't justified for one game.

At least it's not a K7RMA, or should I say K7S5A.

Relax K7S5A owners, it was only the first revision that I found scary. Thought I better add that.

Har, a coworker picked one of those k7rma's up...sure enough...wouldn't work with the cpu he purchased, even though it was supported by the latest bios update and worked with an older cpu (i think it was an 1800, non xps worked). It had someething else wrong with it too, i think it was the onboard lan...don't remember tho.
