When is the next ATI card being released?

Ok most of us have no idea when ATI will release it's next product cycle and most of us have little idea of what the new features may be on this system.

I realize that, but maybe some of you do have an idea of when and what will be released. In the old days companies like Nvidia liked to release a new product every six months. Today unfortunately upgrades are less common.

I was thinking about buying an X800 XT, but it has been on the market for awhile now (relatively speaking). So I can't decide if I should buy it and start playing HL2 or if I should wait just a bit.

Any ideas?

The X800XT PE is prime time.

On paper, yes, but really it has only recently become widely available at a somewhat sane price. Don't hold your breath waiting for R500, it will probably be springtime before it hits, and one can only expect that, just like the X800XT, it will be another paper launch, virtually unavailable and hugely overpriced for months after the official launch.

The longer you wait, the less time the cards sweet spot is going to last. In the words of the Korean lady from Dont drink your juice in the hood, "Hurry up and buy!!".

The problem is, if you need an AGP card, X800XTpe/GF6800U might be as fast as they ever get. I hope I am wrong, but I haven't heard of next gen high end AGP cards coming out. If no future AGP'ers come out, the current high end AGP's are going to hold their price, while their (pci-e)twins will drop and make room for the next cards.

Paper Launch of the R480 and R430 at around X-mas time/January seems to be the current time frame for their next product. Of course when you see one on shelves is uncertain, but with the R430 being 0.11 you may see more of them sooner after launch than previous X800series cards.

R52x (likely R520) will be released in the spring.

Some R480/R430 info;

<A HREF="http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=19499" target="_new">http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=19499</A>

<A HREF="http://www.hkepc.com/bbs/attachments/1w0e_r480430.jpg" target="_new">http://www.hkepc.com/bbs/attachments/1w0e_r480430.jpg</A>

And like Pauldh said, probably no more AGP cards after this current generation in stores now. The R480 and R430 are simply refreshes. The R480 will be only slightly faster than the X800XTPE, and the cost savings advantages of an R430 would be squandered if you add a bridge solution. Of course if demand is enough anything can happen, especially if ATI decided that the MOBO makers are to slow in bringing platforms to the marketplace.

I know you are all for the death of AGP and coming of PCI-e, but I have so many AGP mobos around that I'd like to see new high end AGP offerings for the next year at least. Kinda stinks you can throw a FX-55 on a K8N-neo2 platinum, but can't further upgrade your video card down the road. I moved onto that mobo now on my gaming rig with a A64 3000+ (hoping to do the 2.6 GHz OC thing). I'd like to upgrade this 9800 pro at some point, but I hate paying top dollar for a card. My fear is that the 6800GT will hang near $300+ and the X800XT won't ever drop under $400. One more new AGP refresh might help me get a cheap(er) X800XT someday.

Well if the R480 is only a week away then I'll wait it out. While I do have an AGP Mobo, it's using an Athlon 1400 processor. I'll probably grab a new mobo Athlon 3500 combo and go with that. It adds to the cost, but I look forward to trying out the new 64's.

I would say the paper launch is a week away not actual cards.

Just warning you, never trust launch dates from the review sites, or even here.

I only hope for the death of AGP to push forward the PCIe. I do not wish that this come at the price of others' options, but right now their catering to you and others does seem to hurt my upgrade time table. I think that sucks. I just wish they would get of their a$$es and get the mobos out there so I can get started. I'm thinking of getting another 512mb of memory and the Case, both of which wouldn't be wasted on a new rig.

Logically the PCIe will come first as that is their design, and I hope that there are AGP cards (long enough after the PCIe to motivate the 'wanna be first' people to buy PCIe thus moving the product forward) because I don't want people to be left out in the cold, I just don't think it makes economic/accounting/shareholder sense for them to do so considering those who want the best will buy a new mobo as well if they are willing to plunk down $500+ for a card what's another $100-150 for a new mobo (you can use the same 753/940/939 CPU and DDR memory as your old mobo). Dropping the price of the X800PRO/XT/XTPE once yields are better would be a better plan IMO. If they bridge any chip I would think it would make sense to bridge the R430 due to savings in Mfr, bridging an R480 would likely take it to astronomical prices.

I agree id like to see the technology hurry up and mvoe foward as im interested in building a rig with all the new tech their totting. I just hope Nvidias SLI technology dosnt stop them from developing more power ground breaking cards, id rather see one card constantly being optomized and made faster and better, then dumping to older cards in a connector. I just dont want to see anyone throw all their eggs in anyone basket and take away the mommentum of graphics evolution.

You will see the x800xt drop in price right quick when pixel shader 3.0 becomes adopted by the majority.

ATi is releasing the (R480) X850 XT PE, X850 XT, and X850 Pro after Christmas. Higher clocked versions of the current crop. They will be very expensive.
