I'm looking to get a GeForce 6800 (GT or Ultra) but I don't want to spend the money for the 256MB DDR version. Will I ever notce not having that extra 128MB if I get the 128MB version? Can I make up for this by having 1GB of stystem RAM? Thanks
Blatz, I am by no means an expert. But with the processor you're using I don't think it will matter as it is likely going to be the bottleneck. If you are upgrading then I am just as interested in the responses you get.
If you are not upgrading, it looks like you're not making the same mistake I did. That is, a month or two before I went from that same processor to an AMD 64 I "upgraded" my video card to a Geforce FX 5700 Ultra. You at least would be getting a more future proof card than I did. Now I still need to upgrade my video card. Stupid technology always several steps ahead of my budget...
1. The amount of video RAM on a videocard is still one of the least important aspects of it. It will have NIL effect on performance for all intents and purposes. 128mb is great.
2. System RAM has almost nothing to do with Video RAM. Having more of one doesn't mean you can have less of the other.
3. Buying a 6800 for that system is silly, because your CPU is relatively slow.
get yourself a radeon 9800 or Geforce 6600GT AGP, and upgrade your CPU to a cheap and better AthlonXP if you're going to keep your system for a while.
Otherwise, scrap it all and avoid getting the video card now, because when you upgrade your platform you'll probably need a PCIe video card...
I should've mentioned that I'm building a new system. I already have the Motherboard. Looking to have an Athlon 64 3200+ CPU to use with this graphics card. Thanks for the excellent info!! Any idea what capacity power supply I should use? I currently have 400W, I believe.
