Modems - Serial vs USB

I currently have an external 56k modem connected via my serial port. Ive had the modem for about 2 years now.

I was wondering if upgrading to a new USB 56k modem would make any difference in performance, especially in terms of my ping in online gaming?

I cant get cable where I live so this is my only possible option to maybe improve my connection.

Unless you have an older computer with a slower UART chip.
