Just picked up an ATI 9800pro at Circuit City for $150 after MIR. Thought this was a pretty good buy to replace my slow mx420. I should see a pretty good performance increase at cheap price, right?????

yes, if you call $150 cheap, which is kinda considering its a 9800pro.

I almost bought that, too. I, too, have the GF4 MX420 that came OEM with Dell 8250. Decided to wait on a card and consentrate on other upgrades first. Need a new power supply to replace the meek 250w OEM. Gonna need another 512RDRAM for the new games out there. And just bought a 200gb EIDE HD to add to my 120gb. I'll wait to see the 6800GT go down to $150 probably next summer. Just saw the 6800STD for $200 after MIR.

if I was you(and if this will work) I would simply put that Dell in a new case and forget having to buy a Dell power supply and crap like that. is what I did with my HP. instead of paying almost $100 for a new power supply(185 watts, OH MY!!!) I bought a new case with a 300 watt psu for $30 and forgot about it.

To original poster:

Are you sure its a 256bit card and not a 128bit piece of crap?

Between those 2 cards you will see a quantum leap in performace.

Some "pro" are 128bit. Watch out!

That's a bit optimistic; I would expect it to take at least a year for the 6800GT to drop to that price. The 9800 Pro has barely dropped in price since February.

It's a retail box BBA 9800 pro. I don't think BBA has a 128-bit one like some of the lame oems.

its a prototype of AMDs upcoming processor that runs via the AGP bus. Nice tech, eh.

 Due to lack of pins in CPUs they are useless. Throw them out

Georgebee,

I might consider a new case after my 4-year garantee runs out. For now I don't mind paying the $149 for a new 425w PSU from PC Power & Cooling. I don't want to go thru the hassle (and it is for me) of transfering everything to a new case. But thanks for your thoughts.

sweatlaserxp,

Did the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro start at around $350 last Feb? Now 9 months later you can get it for $150 at Circuit City. I might be optimistic, but I'm counting on the typical pace of graphics cards to kick-in in the next 7 months. I could have purchased a Verto Geforce 6800STD 8xAGP for $200 at CompUSA this past weekend. I don't think it out of the realm of possibilities to see the 6800GT in the $150 range with MIR next summer.

I bought my 9800 Pro (bulk) for $210 last March. The prices are basically the same now as they were ten months ago.

That would be a miracle. It will probably cost $275-350 next summer.

Launch prices are so high nowadays ($500+) that the cards just don't depreciate in value as quickly as they used to.

The card I picked up for $150 was an ATI card and it is 256 bit. I'm going to stick it in a Dell 4550 w/ 250w PS. I'm not running much more in it other than cd/rw. I've read reviews that say Dell understates the actual PS capacity. Anybody else running 9800PRO with 250W PS?
