I'm going crazy. I believe my system is performing below what it should be...and something is fundamentally wrong. PLEASE!! help me with this.

I bought a new card, 6600GT AGP. Put it in my system
ABit NF7Sv2
2.4Ghz XPmobile
512 OCZ Platinum 3200
500W PSU
2 HDs
3 optical drives
etc...

After having slow performance in HL2, Doom 3, etc. I downloaded Rivatuner. First thing I find out, my card is running at 300mhz instead of 500! WTF?! Hmmm... now that I recall, I had my previous 4200ti from MSI running at 300mhz. I did uninstall drivers and run Driver cleaner, but apparently that didn't get rid of something. After adjusting the clock speed in riva tuner, performance is better, but not much. For example, I get about 37FPS in demo1 of Doom 3 at 1024x768. If I put it at 800x600, I get a whopping increase of 3fps. THREE!! In addition, the game runs fine BUT it will get very choppy. Same as the demo. The demo will run REAL fast and then practially stop, then gets back to fast speeds...it's like having a seisure or something.

HL2 runs similarly, with choppiness. No artifacts or anything.

3Dmark05 I get around 3150 or so.

My HD is defragged. No spyware. Minimum background services. Tried 3 diff vid card drivers, 2 diff chipset drivers. tried reducing speed, relaxing mem timings, increasing speed, adjusting voltages, lots of hardware adjustments.

So, what limits performance such that I get only a small increase in FPS when decreasing screen resolution? What causes choppiness? Any suggestions welcome. I really need some help here. Thanks

Your 3dmark score sounds fine for a 6600 GT.

If you can, you may want to stick another 512MB of RAM into the system. 512 is a little on the low side for current games.

Also, as suggested, a reformat of your hard drive with all the latest video and chipset drivers installed wouldn't hurt.

XP2800+, Abit NF7, 1GB Dual-Channel DDR333, ATI R9800PRO 128MB, TT PurePower 420W, LG DVD+-R/RW

You should always reformat when you switch to a different video card, especially if it's from nVidia -> ATi or vice-versa.

I will reformat the Windows partition and see what happens. I agree that my 3Dmark score is okay, which is why it is so confusing. 3dmark05 runs fine, games don't. Also, I might note that my 3d mark score increased about 100pts after increasing clock speed from 300 to 500. I would have expected a larger increase.
