6800GTOC from BFG 128Mb DDR. 6800GTOC 256MB GDDR3 For the extra $100 I would buy the 256. That's if it's in your budget.

If priced the same or very close, grab the 6800 for sure. The 6600GT is a great card, but falls short of the 6800.
Comparing the two,
GF6600GT: 500Mhz Core, 1000Mhz memory. 8 Pipes, 128-Bit Memory, 3 Vertex Pipes
GF6800: 325Mhz Core(350MHz for that BFG OC model), 700Mhz memory. 12 Pipes, 256-Bit Memory, 5 Vertex Pipes

Anyway, even though the 6600GT is clocked higher, the extra pipes and 256-bit memory bus of the 6800 will make it stand out above the 6600GT when the AA/AF eye candy gets turned on. Most tests I have seen the 6800 wins as resolution/details/AA/AF get raised and the cards are pushed to their limits. IMO the close price of the two makes the 6600GT lose alot of it's deserved praise.

Bestbuy had that BFG 6800 in a bundle for $249 after rebate, with Half Life 2 and farcry for free. I think that deal ended today. Outpost has been consistently one of the cheapest, but it may not be in stock.

IMO, the plain 6800 is the best in that price range and you should be able to get one in that $250-$260 range. Black friday there was one for $200 after rebate. If you can find a $200 6600GT, that is a very wise choice to save a little money.

Going up from there, The X800pro, has been as low as $320, but that is still close to the $350 that a 6800GT costs.

ATI is coming out with a $249 list price plain X800 that is rumored or PR'ed at least, to beat out the 6800. But my understanding is it is PCI-e only. :frown:

hmm, i dont think ill be buying an ATI card, only ati card i would buy would be the 9800pro (price for performance), but the 6600gt agp, CRUSHES the 9800 pro, for the same price

Well, I agree it does crush it, but they are not the same price by a long shot. My retail BBA 9800 pro cost me $170 shipped (no rebates) a few months ago from Outpost. On last Friday, you could have had one for $150 after rebate. I am yet to see a 6600GT selling for it's $199 announced price, never mind cheaper. Take outpost for example, $239+ shipping for a 6600GT, or $249 + shipping for a BFG 6800OC(in stock??). The 6800 is more powerful and $50 under list, while the 6600GT is $40 over list.

If the plain $249 X800 is released in AGP (big if), you may wish you had considered ATI. That said, to me it's all a pricing thing and the 6600GT needs to go down to be a best buy. Either that or 6800's need to dissappear, making the 6600GT a clear winner in midrange AGP.

Honestly, I doubt they will release it at all. :frown: If you want a card now, choose from a 9800 pro, 6600GT and plain 6800. If you can grab that 6800 OC for $250, go for it. You'll have to spend at least $320-$350 to do any better than that right now. At this point, ATI isn't being clear on their future mainstream AGP options beside keeping the 9800 pro.

Sorry if I added confusion to a pretty clear area. I just wanted to mention that ATI has some nice mainstream cards due out soon, although PCI-e only for now. If prices change, the x800 pro could be a very good buy. But it will have to be a super sale for that to happen. I don't see it as very likely to find sub-$300 X800 pro's soon.

Is there a big difference between the two?

it was true before the newer games like Doom3, HL2, and Medal of Honor:p acific assault came out. These new games are now tapping into more than 128mb of video memory if available.

Hm, I thought the differences between the 6800 and 6800GT were-
DDR vs DDR3 ram
12 pixel pipes vs 16 pixel pipes (though some 6800s are unlockable to 16 pipes, don't count on it though)

I dunno if BFG does something special to their OC cards, though.

Well, 256MB is starting to show some benefits, like is seen in the X700pro beating out the faster X700XT in some cases. But this was not my point.

More important than that, I was questioning the actual card and core. I am not aware that BFG makes a 128MB 6800 <b>GT</b> OC, but thaat it was a plain 6800 OC instead. Big difference between the two cards as the GT's way outperform the plain 6800.

IF it is actually a 128MB BFG 6800GT that i am unaware of, it would still outperform a plain 6800 even it it were to have 256MB ram. But in general the 6800's are 128MB while the GT's and Ultra's are 256MB. But my whole point is don't confuse a 6800 for a GT as you will definately get less performance if it is a plain 6800. It's fast, but it's not nearly as powerful as the 16pipe & higher clocked GT.

The other thing about the ATI line is the X800SE.

In the AGP you have, the X800SE, X800, X800Pro, X800XT and X800XTPE.

Now <b>IF</b> these wre available in any kind of quantity you could cover the range of AGP from R9800PRO all the way to X800XTPE, and it would just be an issue of pricing. I have seen alot of SEs here in Canada, but I'm not sure what it's like in the US and whether the OEM market is as eay to tap into.

The ufortunate thing, and X800SE is like the GF6800, only slightly better than the GF6600, and usually significantly more money (<b>if</b> the GF6600GT were selling near MSRP that is).

To link AM3 scores, go to your list, click "make public", then you should get a view link. Cut and past that.

It looks like yours still isn't public yet (asks for login).

I saw those at BestBuy and the 6800GTs. Now if BestBuy would do 25% off like the PNYs this week. That would be a super deal on 6800GT $300.

Maybe I got lucky but a 16pipe card running 400 core is enough for now.

Maybe when the prices fall some in the spring on AGP cards Ill try a GT. and give this to my son.
