i have no money as i am a student i am looking for a good gaming card i thought the best price preformance ratio would be a roswell ati radeon 9600 at newegg for 80.00 somethin. this is the cheapest 128 bit 9600 there. any suggestions would be appreciated

Come to think of it, he didn't state what vid card he is currently running.

Not bad, but springing $105 for the Pro will give you more performance. I think once the 9600 pro's dropped near $100 and the 9600 still stayed pricy, the 9600 pro is the way to go for sure. A 128-bit 9550 might not be a bad option if you can find one cheap enough.

If you are real broke, a used GF4Ti might be a good option in the $40 and under range. You can also find Radeon 8500le's new for around $35. I wouldn't go slower than that though. What's your current card?

EDIT: Forget HL2 on a Duron 850. You'll need an OC just to play it. But on top of that, it's a cpu limited game and I doubt you'll like the performance of HL2 on that rig even with a new card.

Yeah, you are in a tough spot. I have two similar systems on my bench now. A KTE Duron 900 and a KT133a TBird 1.2GHz. Both need new HDD's, but besides that I hate to advise them to sink more money into those systems as they are well balanced now with the components they have. The D900 isn't a gamer, but the TB1.2 is used for games.

Anyway, back to you. A video card will help you alot in many games. But the system still won't be up to specs for HL2. I'd OC it and look for a cheap used R8500 or better yet GF4Ti. Otherwise, you could upgrade that KT133A mobo to an Athlon XP I believe(?), but it's still a KT133a with SDR mem. Hard to know what to do in that case, but a cheap card and OC will definately help in many cases. But Farcry, HL2, D3, MOHPA... forget it.
