I currently have a 9000 Pro, and would like to use it for media center. Would upgrading to a FX5200 give me much of a better performance?? (i dont wanna spend too much money)

Thanks,

YiFai

The FX5200 would give you WORSE performance than a 9000 PRO.
The FX5200 sucks.

If you want better performance, you need at least a Radeon 9600 128-bit. (not a Radeon 9600SE 64-bit, those are bad)

if you're poor you could get a 128-bit Radeon 9550 and overclock it.

If you're rich you could get 2 6800Ultra and put them in SLI...now that would be a good quality video.

lol. Blackphoenix slaps it down.

Media center? I missed that part. What do you want to do with your media center that the 5200 can't do?

If you mean you want to play 3d games, look to the radeon 9600. If you want to watch video and TV, exactly what sort of functionality are you looking for that the 5200 doesn't provide?

well no, i'm just saying is it worth it to upgrade from a Radeon 9000 to FX5200... the major thing is that FX5200 is a DX9 card..

but what about Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9600 Pro Advantage 128MB w/ TV-Out, DVI (Lite Retail)... anything good / bad about this one? What's the difference between Pro, Pro Advantage, and XT?

Dont think its worth upgrading to the FX5200 if you already have a 9000.

Never heard of the Advatage PRO cards, but PRO is fater and better than non-pro but more expensive, and XT is even faster than PRO, and more expensive than PRO.

DX9 is not a major thing if the card is too slow to run DrectX 9 shaders (which the FX5200 is). Some games will literally run slower... MUCH slower, if you end up with a 64-bit 5200 (which most of them are).

Once again, what do you want to upgrade for? Games?

If so, the Radeon 9600 PRO Advantage would be a step up. But you should know that Sapphire's ADVANTAGE series run a full 9600 PRO GPU at 400 mhz, but with slower 223 mhz memory (as opposed to true 9600 PRO 300 mhz memory)

The memory will slow the card down a bit compared to a true 9600 PRO, but if you can find the card ata decent price it will still offer you much faster gaming than you currently experience.

sorry i might have not been clear, my upgrade is mainly to run Windows XP Media Center Edition.. which many have told me runs best on DX9 cards...

i think what i'm going to do is try to hook it up to my tv iwth the radeon 9000, and if i'm not satisfied i'll go get the 9600~ i'm only gonna use it for watching mpeg1 and real media videos mostly... so that's why i'm questioning the need to upgrade~~

You will not notice any difference between the 9000 and 9600, or 5200 for that matter when watching TV.

Also, you need specific hardware to run XP MCE, what TV tuner will you be using?

no difference even if i use DVI-to-Component adapter on Radeon 9600? (i think radeon 9000 doesn't support that adapter) If so then i prolly dont need the upgrade then...

i will not be using a tv tuner as i wont be recording tv shows on it, simply to watch .rm, .rmvb, .avi, .mpg files~~

You can get an ATI remote wonder and use it with XP Home or Pro, I just don't understand the need to buy MCE only for the interface.
MCE is designed primarily to turn ur PC into a TIVO. If you're not using a TV tuner, you may as well just buy a remote and use Media Player and My Documents folder to organize ur media. Plus, i'm pretty sure there is software out there that will organize your media content, just as well, if not better than MCE.

well i'm setting this up for my parents, esp my mom who doesn't know computers (like she doesn't even know how to go online)... so i thought MCE would be the easiest way (she could just press the start MCE button to start it up then navigate)..

but if there are other programs that any1 could recommend for xp home/pro.. that'll be great too~~

If you want to hook it up to an HDTV, then YES< it would be a good idea to get a Radeon 9600 or better, and then the YPbPr component adapter...

If it's not an HDTV, you have no use for component output.

I'm running a radeon 9000 pro now and I am considering a 9550. Do you have any recommendations as to which brand builds a better 9550 (in terms of overclocking and general build quality)?
