Can someone tell me how to delete one item from the Common tasks menus on my
desktop.I no longer have the program concerned but I cant get it off the menu.

Take a look at Kelly's http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm
Select C and scroll to Common Tasks.
