Can I use a AGP8x card on a AGP4x mainboard

My mainboard only has a AGP4x slot. It is quite hard to find a "new"(not used) AGP4x card, is it possible to make AGP8x card work with AGP4x slot?

I think all agp8x cards work in agp4x slots (except the 9600Xt if I'm not wrong) and the performance is the same. So not to worry on that.

All 8x cards work in 4x slots. Most 8x cards will work in 2x slots.

Cards that won't work in 2x slots include the 9800XT and 9600 series. I haven't checked anything newer.

But he only asked about his 4x slot.

Wusy, I am pretty sure it is less than that in most situations. My 6800GT, on a 4x AGP motherboard, scores almost as well in 3DMark05 as the same card on an 8x AGP motherboard. There is only a 3-5% difference. Top end cards are just beginning to saturate the 4x AGP bus.<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by Acert93 on 12/19/04 11:32 PM.</EM></FONT></P>

In here! I think its the voltage that is diferent in a 9600XT.

I've teste it with my 9800Pro before it burned away, and the diference between 4x and 8x was none. At least at 1024 with 4x AA and some Aniso. I think even the newest cards don't use that much bandwich.

The last post was not for you crashman. It was for the other guy that thinks it's superior. Where is my statement wrong? I've checked for that 9600XT issue of not working in agp4x here in Pt and the answer was always the same. do you know anything about this issue?
I recall reading it here at this forum some time ago but can't seem to find it anymore.

9600 series works on 4x and 8x motherboards. 9800 series, except for the 9800XT, works on 2x, 4x, and 8x boards. 9800XT works on 4x and 8x boards. There's a link to an article in my last post.
