While trying to open a spreadsheet i get the following: "file format is
> not valid". Then Excel doesn't open.

Deborah,
It looks as though the spreadsheet you are trying to open is the wrong
format, ie not a ".xls" file, maybe a file from someone else? and not
generated by your MS Office 2K.
Although you may well get a good answer here, it might be a good idea to
post at - microsoft.public.excel - newsgroup, lots of experts there.
