alright, i finally bought my new comp and i need help on choosing a graphics card. My current specs are the following

AMD 3500+
ASUS A8N-SLI DELUX
1GB COSAIR XMS RAM
250GB WD S-ATA HD
SB AUDIGY 2 SZ

now i know that my computer is using pci-e. The problem i am having is finding a decent card for the system. I was thinking of an x800xt pci-e or a 6800gt pci-e. I was also considering waiting for the new ati cards, but i think it's gona be sum time until they come out.

ASUS 440BX P3B-F, Intel P3 @ 553Mhz, 128Mb Pc133 Ram, nVidia Gefore 256, IBM 20gig HD, Creative Sound Blaster Live,Lg Cd-Burner, Creative 52x Cd Drive, Microsoft Windows XP Pro/2000 Pro Duel Boot

If I were you I';d give Ati 30 days to come out with the X800XL for $300.

If they don't deliver, get a 6800GT for $400...

Well seeing as how you are paying about $50 extra for thet SLI board you'd better stick with Nvidia cards. From what I've read, the AMR ATI cards require ATI chipsets (because they dont use bridge chips). For now youd prob be best with a 6800GT, then get another one later in the magical day when Nvidia thinks there will be an abundance of good cards for cheap prices (the whole idea behind SLI as an upgrade).

Oh, and fix your sig; you use the word "duel" drives instead of "dual"...unless you mean your drives really dont like each other or something.

Except you are paying over $100 more for a PCI-e GF6800GT compared to AGP. It's not hard to find an AGP 6800GT for $350 if you can afford to look around for a week or so, yet the PCI-e ones are running $475+ now. Newegg has only one, and it is $495. For that money, I'd buy an X800XT PCI-e instead, but like Cleeve said, the X800XL in PCI-e is coming soon and lists for $300. So neither the 6800GT or X800XT look to be good buys in PCI-e now.

Personally, If I needed a PCI-e card right away, I'd buy a 6600GT. It is the only one worthy of the asking price. Then upgrade to something better like the 6800GT or X800XL down the road. he could always keep it and buy a second one too. But otherwise he'd probably get 80+% back in selling it within a few months. better than paying a $150 premium for a highe end NV now.

I think Paul has the best idea. Get a 6600GT in pcie for now to hold you over. I doubt ATI will have the x800XL out when they say they will. I hope they do but neither side has been good with production quantity.
