Dumb networking question

First off, this is probably a dumb question, but I never tried it before so
no harm in asking; right?.

I'd like to hook two Dell PC's together (a laptop and desktop) though a
Ethernet cable.

Will this work? Can I just plug one into the other and be able to control
the XP pro using the XP home system?

Sorry for being so ignor't, but the more I thought about this, the more
cornfused I got. <smile>

Any help appreciated.

Yes, all you need is a "crossover" cable to connect to each other. A
regular cable will not work.

Unless they are both new enough to have Gigabit adapters (like my wife's
8400). Gigabit doesn't care about the cable and figures it out (uses all 8
wires).
