I am interested into buying a new gpu and thought that was a good idea to check THG reviews.
I was mostly interested into 6600 GT or ( if i could get a larger budget) into X800 XT.
Check the following links that both cards go through heavy benchmarking
http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041222/vga_charts-06.html

http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20040907/geforce_6600-07.html

Browse through the pages and the different benchmarks.
At the first link 6600 GT ( a card priced at 250$) is shown to be clearly better than X800 XT ( 450+ $) at almost all benchmarks!!!!

At the second link ( where a large number of card go through testing) the 6600Gt is way slower that X800 XT.

What is wrong with this picture anyway...!!!!
I am having second thought on how reliable can those tests be ( browse all the pages and all the benchmarks to see how ridiculous this gets)

At least learn to look at the same games. As comparing results in two different games just shows that different cards to better with different games.

Then pay attention to fact that the test systems are completely different.

Then pay attention to fact that, because of fact the two tests are three months apart, the drivers for both the nvidia and the ATI cards are both noticably updated.

You need to study those charts some more. In one, you are looking at 2 GF6600GT's in SLI, which only beat the X800XT in Doom 3 at low resolution (cpu limited). Up the resolution and eye candy, the XT pulls ahead. In all other tests it's ahead too.

In the other COD and Doom 3 are OGL games, which NV is better at. But also that was ages ago and ATI's drivers have made large gains in Doom 3. But you are still looking at the low res tests with no eye candy. these don't stress the video card, and nobody with a high end card or SLI setup is going to play at 1024 no AA/AF.

ANyway, make no mistake, the X800XT is far superior to the GF6600GT, or even 2 6600GT's in SLI. In some tests, of some games, at low resolutions, with no AA, with some drivers, etc. yes the 6600GT could win out. Now note even a radeon 9800XT has done this to the entire new generation of cards, and it is not a more powerful card. When stressed, just like the 6600GT, the it would absolutely get demolished by the X800XT.

Basically with the top cards, don't be concerned about low res no eye candy tests. Look at the best playable settings to see just what the more powerful cards offer. That said, if you have a 15"-17" monitor and 1024x768 is you max resolution, doesn't make much sense to buy a $500 video card.

The 6600GT is a great card for the money, especially in PCI-e where it costs less, and there aren't as many better options easy to find at an acceptable price. In AGP, buy a GF6800 if it's priced the same.

Going up from there, the GF6800GT in AGP is not priced that bad (often $350), and it is far faster than mainstream cards. The X800XT is faster yet, but costs alot. it's only worth that price for people with the money to spare, with top notch systems, who want top performance even at a premium price. It's a great card...I want one. But just not priced at where I can justify it as a good buy.
