this is so stupid ive waited for my nv silencer 5 and arctic silver to come in for a long time and now it finally has...but i put it on my leadtek 6800 gt and now it had the green lines and some multi color...PLEASE tell me there is a way to fix this as i have voided the warrenty
you didnt squish out some of that arctic silver onto the chipset did you? If you got compound on your board that wouldn't be good but maybe it's just a defective card?
If you got thermal compound on anything on that card besides the heatsink and GPU then it could cause problems yes. Sometimes people arent exactly sure exactly how much of this stuff to apply. They squeeze out a good glob and when they tighten down the heat sink it can ooze out the sides and get on the board. that is probably one of the reasons that the mfgr. will say that it voids your warranty.
Now I'm saying that this is what happened but merely pointing it out as a possibility. Only the tiniest amount of paste is needed. when the heat sink is tightened, this stuff suishes out very thin. that is why only a tiny amount is needed. I haven't put it on a GPU but i use an amount of paste on my CPU/HSF the size of 1 1/2 grains of white rice. set it in place, give it a 1/3 of a twist in each direction to smear it and then tighten it down, all the while being very careful not to get any of this thermal compound on anything else.
I hope thats not what happened to you.
Take the card out and inspect it closely to see if there is any oozage around the GPU/HSF. If there is try cleaning it very gently with iso/alcohol. watch out for lingering fuzzies because they too can cause problems on a card.
I hope your not using everclear or 151 rum elementkid? LOL
I abreviated in my earlier post but I should have spelled it out clearly. ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL is what you need to use. not just any alcohol. Try using q-tips and blotting it off with small scrunched corners of fairly lint free cloth. (be careful with q-tips, they leave fuzz on parts.)
You may be heading the RMA route too if you got much of that compound on that card.
He probably has ISO-70% it's common at DrugStores.
He should go to an electronics shop or look for at least the 90-95% stuff you can get at SOME drugstores. The 70% has too much wood ester(s) and leaves too much residue IMO.

wait...so arctic silver 5 can ruin it? UGH! like i tookoff heatsink and dont have it nemore...does any1 like know what i can do and yes...i have the 70% drug store kind not everclear lol
If you got AS on any of the leads or traces around the gpu, it can cause problems. The "problems" may go away, if you take off the excess AS. You might be okay, if you clean it all off. The 70% iso will do fine. Clean bothe chip and hsf very well. To reapply the AS, this is what I do.
I wrap a piece of tape around the end of my finger. I put a very small dab on the hsf, and spread it with the taped part of my finger. The AS should be so thin that I can almost see right through it. I then run the taped finger across the gpu. Again, the AS should never be as thick as a piece of paper. When I put the hsf in place, I give it a few gentle twists, to even things up. Then I attach the holddowns.
Elementkid, slow down. You are being incoherent. If you spilled the Artic compound on you over you gpu dye, then you may have very well damaged your card. If I were you I would take the heatsink back off your card and see if that is the case. If it is attempt to clean it with a toothpick very carefully, don't put alcohol on it, just try to wipe as much of it off as you can with a toothpick and reapply a small amount of AS5 to your GPU dye and install the Arctic Cooler again and start your computer back up. If there are still green lines you probably damaged your card, so you could try returning it, but don't be surprised if you get denied.
You can still use your new NV silencer 5 but you have to clean everything really well first. ALL of that thermal stuff must be removed from the board, contacts, chipsets, etc.... Clean it all from the surfaces of the HSF and the GPU also for now. After you've completely cleaned this bugger then you can begin anew and this time only put on a tiny amount of AS paste. I mean tiny. grain of rice, match head, etc.... very little.
But first you have get every little smudge of that old paste off. Hopefully it will be ok but get it really clean, really, really clean! hehehe
