Replacing cabinet sides: How to separate sides from rest o..

Hello -

I was thinking about last week's Pac-Man mini find, which I passed on due to
various problems - monitor, joystick, and water-damaged sides. The guy said
he'd be willing to put in a working monitor and joystick to make the sale,
but I'm still concerned about the water damage, which is on the side panels
only. The machine powers up and plays, so the boards are apparently OK.

I'm tempted to make an offer and replace the sides myself. How do I go
about separating the sides? I'd imagine there's some bracing inside (I
honestly don't remember all the details, but I do remember that only the
sides had water damage; everything alse looked like plywood).

Thanks for your help!

Unless the selection in your area is really slim, I'd pass on common
cabinets that have water damage. Doing extensive restorations on average
games is a waste of time and $$$. Save the full resto jobs that involve new
sides, complete rebuilds, or removing paint from painted over cabs for the
rare and unusual game. Pac mini's just aren't worth it.

That would be a project but not impossible. Most of the plywood cabinets
look to be "screwed and glued" using 7/8 or 1 inch square wooden cleats
at the corners ,glued and then screwed thru into the plywood
side, top, bottom,or front panel. Remove the screws and then(depending on
how the glue has held up) separate the cleat from the panel(s). One side
may give in easier without tearing the ply. Worst case, you may have to
get in and chisel the cleat free then make a new one.
Good luck.

It's especially not worth it if he's going to keep it. Keeper games should
be those special ones that are in such good condition that finding another
one like it would be near impossible. The sad truth is that it's all too
easy to collect junk as most of the games left out there fall into that
catagory. A serious collection of quality games takes time. Water damaged
rebuilds don't cut it for me.

I apppreciate all your replies. I've decided to just pass on this one.
Pickings are slim, but I'll keep looking for the right game.

Good choice, considering that just about Pac anything is a dime a dozen.
Spend some time waiting and looking around, dont be afraid to actually spend
some money if you have to. Any nice collection isnt built overnight and nor
does it always come cheap or free.
