Can any one guide me to a good article or show some insight to which of the two setting I should set my video card to.

Am I correct to understand that D3D is Direct X based, and everytrhing else is Open Gl?

I also understand that HL2 as an example has support for both, but one must be better?

You don't have to "set" your card to anything.

You videocard will process both DirectX and OpenGL instructions.

Most games are created for either one standard or the other, but your videocard will work with whatever game is thrown at it.

The original Half Life had instructions for either engine (I forget which worked better, I think it depended on the 3d card you used), but that was the old days. The new Half Life is 100% DirectX.

In short, you have nothing to set or concern yourself with. Just play.
