Depending on the specs and what he's throwing in (monitor, software, etc),
he's likely in the $350 to $500 range on ebay. Obviously a large LCD
monitor and a very generous software bundle with discs could alter that a
bit.
$900 will get one a very nice used PowerEdge4400 dual-CPU server with
multiple hot-swappable hard disks and redundant power supplies 
(and
probably MS Server software with 5 cals....)
