its been about 2 years and I still havent found what im looking for..
here is my original post:
http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=344588#344588

This is my new idea:
2 computers
1st computer with ATI X850 XT PE DVI out.
2nd computer with the capture card
both computers will have fastest/biggest CPU/HDD/RAM

I want to capture PC gameplay at 2048X1536

FRAPS software isnt an option because of poor FPS

Does anyone know how I could do this? What type of capture card I need?

The technology hasn't changed much since your last post.

There's alot of limitations in your scenario.

First that resolution is more than 50% more than 1080P resolution (let alone 1080i or 720P) so there really isn't anything geared to recording at that level, heck there's little geared to PLAY that kind of video except for WindowsMedia.

Second, at such a high resolution you'll still need a heck of a RAID array sata or scsi in order to record that many pixels at once and it'll have to have mega bandwidth Ultra scsiII raid array IMO. And if you use compression (even hardware) to do it you might as well play at a lower resolution to start with and reduce compression artifacts.

I think you're still out of luck, and at such resolutions I don't know of anything that would do that. All current (and future if you include 1080P) HD recording formats are well below that level.

Wow, your still here.
Any ideas on what the highest capture resolution is?

I found this card
http://www.foresightimaging.com/PRODUCTS/hdp/accustream170.htm
Which Is what I think I found 2 years ago..
its says it can capture video at 1600X1200 30fps

quote from their site:
For example, a video signal of 1600 x 1200 x 60 frames per second is 162 MHz. AccuStream 170 achieves a maximum video streaming rate of 30 frames per second from this video format.

Just out of curiousity, why?

What are you trying to do this for, because maybe you don't need such a powerful setup, and why do you need to capture at such a high resolution.

Also, what game do you have that you are able to run at that resolution?

If you tell us what purpose you want to do all this for, maybe we can direct you to a solution which is more simple than you think you need.

Yeah, fraps video recording while a nice feature, does lower fps a bunch. In multiplayer games, you can watch from a second machine in a LAN game and record on that one, but still get a performance hit on the recorder not to mention the quality is not what you are after. It's still better than recording while gaming of course. I experimented with some of this because I had hoped to burn a DVD of some LAN Gaming highlights to give out to my buddies. I first tried fraps, then I was experimenting with the two PC solution like you mentioned. Using one compputer to watch other players game and then going out to the SVHS input on my video editing rig to capture the best quality video I could. It was a free experiment for me, but the results were not great. I was never really happy with the quality of the captures going SVHS out to SVHS in on the two PC's. The results were like web surfing with svhs outputs to your tv. I eventually gave up because of the time wasted and still not getting the results I wanted.

Anyway, I have not researched this in ages, so not sure what options are available now. I was thinking of buying a <A HREF="http://www.svideo.com/hdtvaiwr8500.html" target="_new">DVI to componenet adapter for my 9800 pro</A> and going into one of the <A HREF="http://www.crutchfield.com/S-cppjMeI7Vaj/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=69800&id=morephotos&pi=2&i=133dmre85h&display=XL#Tab" target="_new">Panasonic HDD DVD-recorders</A> component inputs as two of my buddies who game at my place have these recoders. But unfortunately, they have component video outputs, not inputs. So it would be nice to have a recorder with Component or even DVI inputs. I honestly have not looked into if these exist or if it is even a possibility for them to exist. And I was just looking for DVD resolutions without buying alot more than I have here, and not that high resolution that you are trying to record.

Do any PC capture devices exist that accept DVI or component inputs? I'm being lazy and am asking without googling it myself. Just my uneducated  guess that this would be the best available affordable solution if it exists.
