I have a change to buy a used 9800XT-256mb from a guy at work for $215.00 or get a new 6600GT-128mb from NewEgg for about the same dough. Either card will go on an A64-3200 Clawhammer. Any opinions?

Abit IS7 - 3.0C @ 3.6ghz - Mushkin PC4000 (2 X 512) - Sapphire 9800Pro - TT 420 watt Pure Power
Samsung 120gb ATA-100 - Maxtor 40gb ATA - 100
Sony DRU-510A - Yellowtail Merlot

6600GT - More features + overclocking.

At stock they are about the same, the GT pulls ahead at higher resolutions

OK it's your choice:
You can have the boat, or you can have the Mystery Box!
...Hey wait a minute! A boat's a boat, but a Mystery Box could be anything. It could even be a boat

last gen tech vs current gen tech when both are equal? Which one would you choose...

Also, the 6600GT run alot cooler than the XT's

Ive got the 6600GT and the X700Pro and 9600XT ATI. The 6600GT runs cooler no doubt. With my leadtek 6600GT the software is great. It makes updates and overclocking very easy. The 6600GT outperforms both cards that I listed hands down. The only case that I know of that X700 would be the way to go is if you have an Intel 775 then you need ATI for Overclocking reasons, but that doesnt apply to you. Never used the 9800 so I cant say for sure which is better, but the 6600GT is a good card.

To save us both time, assume I know EVERYTHING

I'm with you. They are pretty much equal performers IMO, with the edge maybe going to the 6600GT. The 9800XT does give 256MB RAM for what that is worth. But the big thing is I see it as owning the very best video card money could buy 1 year ago, or the very best $200 midrange buy today. Former Champ or new mediocre contender. Even if the fight is a draw, I like the former champ. There is more status in owning the 9800XT IMO. I mean it's a legend. Oops, that said, there sure isn't much ledgendary status in owning a GF4Ti4600 now is there. Oh well, this is 90% humor and 10% lame fanATIcal honest gut feeling. I'd want the 9800XT just for the fun of owning one.

Actually at higher resolution with AA/AF turned on the GF6600GT will actually disable the AA/AF ecause it's 128bit 128mb can't handle the strain. So be sure when you read the reviews you remember that many times it's not actually running like the reviewer set it to, and even they don't realize it. Had to point it out to two reviewers sofar who din't notice either no or even Postive performance impacts when turning AA/AF on. at high res.

The R9800XT will allow you to put higher levels of AA/AF on in many cases, but for newer games I'd say when neither can use high resolution high AA/AF you'll see the GF6600GT pull ahead, but they are pretty close at playable levels. 120fps versus 110fps sound like a big deal at 1024x768, but really who's going to be sticking at that resolution for either of thee cards. They're close, I'd give the GF6600GT the nod but there are areas where it's weak and it will lose to a 256bit/mb card will beat it. Personally a GF6800 or X800SE would be a better choice even for a slight premium if your interest is 'future-looking'.
