X[ SOUND ISSUES

I recently got a XP machine installed in office and it seemed to work fine. I
set my mail to make a sound when a specific day comes up with an event. When
it does sometimes it does but most time it does not make a sound and then
when I look down my sound icon is muted by itself. I unmute it then it works
but all of a sudden it mutes by itself again. I never hear the ding when I am
supppose ot know a event time. Can it be fixed??
