GeForce 6800

I'm about to purchase a GF6800 (vanilla - can't afford a GT or Ultra!). The site I usually buy from have both the MSI and Leadtek models. The specs appear to be identical, they come with same games bundle, and the price is the same.

So, to help me decide, anyone got any good / bad opinions on either of these?

Do you also think it's worth the extra £18 for an Arctic cooling VGA silencer? I'd like to try unlocking and overclocking the card a little?

yes for overclocking, as well as picking up some thermal paste and some ramsinks.

hi, I bought the Leadtek 6800 plain and am quite satisfied as it comes with the solid copper heavy heatsink, as in the article at Toms: http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20040928/index.html
I was able to unmask the 4 pipes and 1 shader, however, could not achieve any oc with them active, so went back to 12 and 5 which gave me over 10K on 3DMark03, which aint half bad, but backed off to 380/815 from 400/900 due to long term gaming stability for hours on end. still gives about 9k tho. If you can possibly get a refurb for only $50 more at Newegg.com, do it cause they are much faster for future games.

with the galaxy 6800, piplines unlocked easily with rivatuner, achived 10300 on 3dmark 03 no oc with OC 10600.
with out unlocking or OC we got 9600.

i have noticed different brands always achive different scores, plus different OC, a high OC doesent always mean faster speeds.

Well, I am running a Athlon3200+ amd with 1.5G NF2, so the other may be at AMD64 3200+, and that will make the difference.

JUST IN, check out the controversy about MSI shipping 6800s as 6800GTs in europe. Course, wouldn't affect your decision, but the brand is now a little suspect. Darn, can't find link, sorry, The Great Grape Ape was the one posting it and he is ALWAYS good info. (no sarcasm intended)

my msi has bad ram, im ram'ing it soon. the pipes did unlock fine tho, as well as the vertex shader.

WELL I HAVE A 2600XP 333FSB WITH 512 RAM 333MHZ, it must say a lot in the performance difference of a galaxy 6800 and a leadtek 6800 which you have, the 6800 i have has 2.0ns memory.

there is some small differences manufacturers do to slightly make there product better than the standard, these are the goodies good shoppers should be looking for to get the most out of there $$$$.

Very interesting.....,I may have to check out the scores again with the full pipes and shaders, cause your results are quite different than mine, tho I haven't noticed any large difference in the brands. Will get back later on. Thanks for the info, buddy.

PS: 2ns memory DOES translate to 1000mhz ddr speed, right?
PS,PS: Checked specs, yours is 2.2ns, or about 900mhz, mine is 700mhz, so that would be a lot of difference.

its 2.2ns sorry buddy, but i can never get near 900mhz speeds on that vanilla the most is 840mhz at best and that is not always stable. 6800 vanilla is my bros.

i prefer the x800xt i have less heat.

Yeah, mine would go 900mhz, but nowhere near with the pipes and shader unmasked. In fact, would not go much above the stock with unmasked. Maybe try masked with OCed, might go to near 900 or 1000, heh.

Hi, I was getting less OC, I feel, cause the pipelines were defective. That is why I think it was binned for a cheaper price. I don't think there is a difference tween the 6800 and the 6800GT GPUs. Just the masking. SOMETIMES, they mask perfectly good pipelines, and if you are lucky, you end up with a 6800GT GPU. But those are usually at the end runs, i think.

i get no difference in OC with masked and un masked,
apart from when masked i get 9500 ish in 3dmark03 but unmasked i NOW get 10500 with driver 71.23 from galaxy. good stuff.

i just put it down to bios of the gfix card not supplying enough power to the memory, i never get artifacting at all with high OC of memory, it will just crash running half way through 3dmark, temp would be avaerage no higher than 57C.

actually i never get artifacting even with the gpu OC at 380mhz, one time it did 405 mhz but i would not try that again. standard clock is 350.

when unmasked i get the performance of a stock x800pro, when OC its near a standard 6800gt.

its fun pushing this puppy but i want some modded bioses for it to see how much i can push it, strap on a cpu cooler and see what punishment it can take, if it blows it blows, i will give my brother another stolen 6800 from pcworld.

HOOEEE boy,
Nice to have a company give you 7xxx drivers, best I get are 67s from Leadtek. Be happy with having all 16 pipes open (with OCing!) and don't worry about getting more, cause that stuff is really not even used yet in 98% of gaming experiences. But I loves the smooth eye candy too.
