AGP 4X? 8X? Can one run on the other?

Greetings.

I have a Dell Dimension 8100 that I've had for more than 3.5 years, and lately the primary game I run, Everquest, has been taxing the GeForce4 MX video card. I would like to upgrade to a newer Nvidia card, such as the 6600 or one of the GeForce FX series, but on an AGP 4X motherboard, will it run an AGP 8X card?

If it doesn't, my alternatives then are a) more RDRAM, or b) totally new computer, since IIRC, the P4 processor was designed solely for the current motherboard.

Yep, you can run an 8x AGP card on a 4x AGP mobo.

There isn't even a noticable performance difference between the two.

How much RDRAM do you have right now? Which cards are you considering?

You're right Paul, why waste time?

AVOID THE GEFORCE FX SERIES. very bad cards, weak DirectX 9 shaders. Horrible... horrible.

6600's are OK, and Radeon 9600 PROs are really good for the price.
