Dell 48X CD-RW/DVD ROM drive trouble

Has anyone experienced trouble with this drive (HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481-B)
(number from hardware device manager) reading high speed CD-RW media? I
tried running 24X CD-RW Memorex media and got all sorts of drive errors.
Doesn't happen with CD-R 48X media, nor 12X CD-RW media.

Comments or experiences? Dell CSR's are completely clueless of course and
of no help. One asked me what I needed the high speed disks for. I told
him to back up my hard drive. He then actually asked me why I wanted to do
that!?!?!?
