Some FX cards are good but I'd say the worst video card of all time is the FX5800.

technically the worst vid card one be one of the first gens...but I can't be bothered looking for out dated benchmarks to choose the crappiest card of all time

It was too heavy, too noisy, too hot, and it was too damn slow.

Man those were good days when we bagged on that card non stop.

More importantly, the 5800 was touted by Nvidia as the 9700 PRO killer, when it's performance is far closer to the 9600 PRO in real life... even beneath the 9600 PRO when it comes to DirectX 9 stuff.

The 5800 is the knife Nvidia bought to Ati's gunfight...

Matrox Parhelia. Sorry, but that was and still is an overpriced piece of silicon trash. It has the worst performance of any card that I've seen for that price and even years after its release it still sets uneducated consumers back $330. Wow.

But the Xabres are a wise choice in the top of the list.

I mentioned the Volari earlier, but I guess much like the cards themselves, no one cared or noticed!

IMO, XGI Volari Duo V8 is worse than Xabre cards, because it was supposed to compete with R9700 Pro/9800 Pro. Image quality wise, both are equally terrible.

Aha, yes I missed that, got distracted by your other entries, the Volari comment looked like a Siggy (I usually ignore the last line in a post if it looks like a sig [none of us are witty enough :wink: ).

Well I think the Volari has redefined the level of sucketude for a next generation. It was a dual GPU card meant to clobber single GPU cards (well it's fill rates are still better than X800XTs and GF6800Us, but only in synthetic tests), it used more power, created more heat, was nosier than a GF5800U by many accounts, and had Faq'ed driver problems. The biggest reason for it's caidancy IMO is that most people agree that the FX series sucked, but the Volari made the FX look like a master stroke of stability, performance, and great drivers, even making the Detonators look like the IQ choice for a change.

Also what other card has a cheesy ballard it's named after.

Who knows, maybe there's an 80s metal band called Xabre that I missed!

I think the FX 5800 Ultra (a.k.a. the Dustbuster) has to take the trophy. Not only did it shock everyone with the noise level of its cooling "solution," but it came nowhere near being able to live up to the hype that surrounded it performance-wise. Its drivers were shoddy and it was unreliable...truly a piss-poor effort by nVidia and the first sign that nVidia was getting desperate.

Voodoo5 has to rank right up there. Too bad, too, because the previous Voodoo cards had really become the "must-have" cards for any serious gamer, and then 3DFX just fell off the map.

You had to know that 3DFX was failing to see the future when they made the Voodoo3 a 16-bit color-only card. And it all went downhill from there...

im not going to mention the fx5800 because everyone else did before me, but in my expirience, the fx5200 [wow], and the ati rage mobility

It's not <i>great</i>, but it's only a laptop chipset, and works ok as such...

I have a laptop with it and I'm happy enough with it. Most games are too limited by the HDD and RAM in my lappy. :frown:

It does disappoint in a laptop with better RAM and a faster CPU though I guess (Mine's a PIII-M 1.13 w/ 384Mb PC133)

Trust me, you don't want a Saphire 9800 SE, It even crushes when you are playing some simple 3D games...How come no one has problem with ATI video cards?

Nothing wrong with a 9800se is it's priced about like a 9600 pro.

Yeah and the R9800SE-256bit is as good or better than many R9600XTs (plus the slim chance of moding) and the R9800SE-128bit is just below the R9600P. So if you know what you're getting it's fine. The thing is the st00pid consumer again in that case. At least it's clearly marked unlike the R9800PRO-128bit.

Unfortunately, I think that's the case dude. Most people who buy 9800SE's don't experience the problems you have... if they did, we'd here about it more...

hey, you <i>sure</i> your problems are actually down to the card? If you've just upgraded from an older card the extra load on the Power supply might have pushed it over the edge, or if your case airflow is bad then it might just be overheating....

What exactly are your problems, and what's your other hardware? When did the problems start?

The problem started after I bought the card 2 months later...I think the card has some problems itself...

every hardware manufacturer sometimes puts out faulty cards. if you purchased it legitimately , you coudl have taken it back.


the R300 series has no inherient instabilities. It was your windows installation, or some other program you had installed that caused your stability issues.

my FX5200 wasn't that bad...in Counter-Strike. but thats pretty much all i play so it worked fine for me.

driver conflicts and suchlike could cause it...

Like I said, it could also be overheating, or possibly a failing power supply....

Hercules was great card in its time. I had Hercules in my very first PC (XT 8Mhz, 640kb ram, 2x360kb FDD, no HDD  ) and was very happy with it. The alternatives were crappy CGA and expensive EGA cards. It was VGA clones who killed Hercules...

Well geez dhlucke, of course people trying to play HL2 with a TNT2 are going to be dissapointed. But that doesn't make the TNT2 a bad card.

What makes a videocard good or bad is it's relative performance at time of release...

Hell, if the Volari V8 Duo was released at the same time as the Geforce 256, it would rightly *be* one of the greatest videocards of all time. But that ain't the case...
