I installed a Linksys BEFSR41 switching router and can no longer make pc to phone calls because of the built in firewall.
Do not know a lot about networking. The phone program wants me to open up some TCP and UDP ports to enable it to work. I can't find anything about UDP or TCP port enabling in the manual or the Linksys web page.
I think I can get around this by disabling the onboard firewall and running a firewall on each puter on the network. Then all I have to do is temporarily disable the firewall on the puter I want to use to make a call.
Will this work?
Will my network still be invisible to the outside world and my ISP? (except for the times the firewall is disabled)
Can or how do you enable UDP or TCP ports with the Linksys
I think there is an option related to DMZ or something to that affect in the router config. You can open the ports for just one machine.. You then could probably config a software firewall to just open those certain ports on that machine..
Hi Chord,
Tried the DMZ thing but no go. Still says I need to open up some ports for it to work. BTW, I an using the free ver. of Zone Alarm. Do full featured firewalls allow to to force ports open?
Andoh
I also have a linksys router. Your problem is not unique. ICQ phone and most other telephony software for PC to PC calls doesn't work through our routers or any other similar routers that I know of. Your best bet for now is to use a program called Firetalk, a simple and free telephony app that's made specifically for people behind firewalls. It works for me. The only problem is convincing your pals to install Firetalk.
hmm yeah if you've still got Zone Alarm installed that might do it (in fact the router and zone alarm are kind of overkill in my opinion). Try the DMZ config without Zone Alarm installed. If that doesn't work, I'd call Linksys and explain to them that you can get the router to open ports on a specific machine (it's not that long to get through to them..though I don't know how helpful they will be).
I should have explained myself a bit better. I did disable Zone Alarm while the router was set up using DMZ but still a no go. I'll give the Linksys people a call and ley you know what I find out.
BTW Kdaluz, I'm trying to do pc to phone, not pc to pc. Most of my relatives have not joined the computer age yet Thanks for your help.
Lots of help for the Linksys router there... And allowing ports through shouldn't be a problem (and it should be briefly mentioned in the manual). The web site above goes into more detail.
