I tested my Gainward 6800GT 256mb/agp with my favorite game - Unreal Tournament 2004. I used the same map THG uses in most of their benchmarks (Torlan). I set the game settings to max quality on all with 1024x768/32bit. no AA and no AF, image quality in the driver is set to performance. But i cant get an fps thats over 85!
according to the benchmarks the results were ussually ~100fps! anyone know what settings can be messed up here?
thanks.

Sounds like vsync is on and your refresh rate is 85 Hz. If you want to bench it, turn vsync off. For playing it's fine to keep it on to reduce tearing.

I should add... it's a 6800GT! Set those drivers back to quality and turn on AA & AF! No use having a nice card like that if you aren't going to take advantage of some eye candy!

btw those settings sounds more like a cpu test :p

Vsync is unmarked, and i set my refresh rate at one point to 60hz, ussually 100hz, yet i still cant pass 85fps. Im aware about the quality settings, but i just got the same results with AA and AF, so i wanted to lower them to see if fps would go higher.

Guys i still dont have any suggestions to why i cant get any results over 85fps. according to <A HREF="http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20040907/geforce_6600-04.html" target="_new">benchmarks made by THG </A>on the 6800GT with unreal tournament I should be seeing higher results. thier test set-up is just a bit different than mine. Instead of my northwood 3Ghz cpu they used a 3.2 cpu, and instead of thier mobo/chipset, i have an Asus P4P800 Deluxe mobo with a via chipset. can these 2 factors alone make such a great difference in what my 6800GT can do???

UT2K4 is almost completely CPU dependant. Even Lars mentions it;

<i>"With FSAA und AF disabled, the fastest cards prove to be CPU bound."</i>

That you say you get the same results with and withou AA/AF should also be a hint to that limitation.

Try overclocking and underclocking your system (but not the card), then try doing it with the card, see which has a bigger impact.

The fact that this is a relatively 'simple' game doesn't change the fact that it is among the most CPU dependant out there, and will bring systems to a halt where and R9800Pro will get better results than an X850XTPE simply because the system it piggy-backs upon is more powerful.

Recently in another thread we saw a UT2K4 benchmark with SLI configuration what beniftied more from a CPU overclock than from adding the extra card (which did also boost performance).

But probably the BIGGEST difference, there's no BOTs or anything else. Adding players makes things even worse. Are you comparing your PLAYING FPS to his Benchmarking FPS? You'll never match that when playing, it's stressing the hell out of a system.

Seriously, you're going to have to consider uping you CPU and memory speeds to get much more IMO.

im thinking of upgrading, i think if i will itll also be a platform change altogether, perhaps the new chipset for amd and and athlon 64 3400+. amd seems like the right choice for gaming as well. and i think combining my nvidia 6800GT with an nvidia chipset might bring great results.
as for my ram, is 4x256mb of corsair on dual channel not enough? they are running today at 2-3-3-5 speed, limited by the mobo from reaching faster latencies. :-/

I don't think nV + nV matters, since nVcard + ATImobo seems to perform better (but only by a very small amount mind you) sofar with the new X200 MoBos. Even the VIAs are just about par.

4x256mb is enough, but usually it will limit your OC'ing, and you will get better results from 2x512mb. But considering that you are running them fairly low latency (same as my single stick) it's probably not the limiting factor yet, but what speed are you running them, just 200mhz? That may be it, especially the Intel rigs are less appreciative of low latencies as they are higher frequencies.

Just be aware you may have more issues when moving to the AMD64 because of that as the timing becomes the most sensitive issue, and this generation does seem to have it's weird results IMO where even quality stick on some mobos crapp out very early at CL2, and some mobos (not the chipset but the different OEMs) can require 2.5 whereas another was fine at 10+mhz more at 2.0. But in any case, worry about that when you get there and you find out what's stable for you.

For now try to up the speed even at the cost of latency, and up you CPU, it should help while you wait for your new rig. Just a warning be careful, don't just jump the OC'ing use usual caution.
