I got an old HDD from my girlfriends old machine and stuck it into my spare Duron 800 machine. I fdisked and full formatted and tried to install windows 98 and was greeted with the a lovely message informing we windows could not run standard mode due to HIMEM.sys and if i didn't use HIMEM.sys to update my memory manager (or something along those lines).

This is not a HDD fault and it is not a RAM fault. What's gone wrong? Have I formatted it wrongly?!

Update!

Installed Win98 onto the drive on another machine and then bunged it into this one again. Loads up until it's about to go in when I get a "VxD error device B section 3" or something. It lovingly tells me to run setup again...but I can't ;)

HELP!

You have a hardware problem, not a software problem.

Did the old hard disk have something like "On Track" software. (Allows larger drives to work on mobo's with a hardware limitation).

U may need a manufacturer utility to clean up the disk properly.
